This is the Volunteer Firefighter role with Highlands County Fire Rescue (HCFR). HCFR was formed October 2, 2018, by resolution of the Highlands County Board of County Commissioners. The department consolidated operations of ten independent volunteer fire companies and, later, Highlands County EMS into HCFR.
HCFR is an all-hazards response organization, responding to 911 calls for myriad issues including but not limited to structure, brush, vehicle, and trash fires; motor vehicle wrecks; shootings, stabbings, and other injuries along with heart attacks, strokes, COVID, and many other illnesses. We also respond to hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue calls, cats in trees, life assists, odor/sound investigations, and many other emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance.
Responsibilities- Respond to 911 calls for emergencies including structure fires, brush fires, vehicle crashes, and other incidents.
- Provide emergency medical response for heart attacks, strokes, and other illnesses; assist with COVID-related responses and health emergencies as needed.
- Respond to hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue calls, animal incidents (such as cats in trees), life assists, and odor/sound investigations, along with other emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance.
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Complete the application process
- Appear in person at a local fire station or headquarters to receive , uniforms and firefighting gear (no charge)
- Completion of New Hire Orientation (no cost and no prior training required)
- Regular attendance at meetings and internal trainings
- No specific residency requirement, but volunteers must be capable of responding to the assigned station for calls and generally live close to the station
- Receive $5.00 for every call you respond to, paid quarterly
- Length of service award program (specific amounts may apply)
