Overview
The Wyoming State Public Defender’s Office is seeking law student externs with a passion for public service, criminal defense, and constitutional rights. This externship provides hands-on legal experience working alongside dedicated public defenders as they represent indigent clients in all phases of criminal proceedings. Externs will gain valuable insight into the criminal justice system, support real cases, and develop legal research, writing, and advocacy skills.
The position offers an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced attorneys, observe courtroom proceedings, and explore a career in public defense.
Externship placements are available in multiple locations across Wyoming

Responsibilities- Conduct legal research and draft motions, briefs, and other filings under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
- Observe and assist in client interviews, court hearings, and trial preparation.
- Assist attorneys in reviewing discovery, developing case strategy, and preparing for courtroom proceedings.
- Participate in team discussions about case theory and constitutional issues.
Gain exposure to a wide range of cases, including misdemeanors, felonies, and juvenile matters.
Minimum Qualifications- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school and have completed at least one year of legal coursework by the time of the externship.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Commitment to public service and the mission of indigent defense.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Willingness to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- This is an unpaid externship opportunity (unless otherwise arranged through your law school).
- Students are encouraged to seek academic credit or school-based funding if available.
- Start and end dates are flexible, with placements available during both the summer and academic year, subject to site availability.
