Habitat & Access​/Access Technician

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking two (2) eight-month Habitat & Access/Access Yes Technicians to support and enhance public access and wildlife management efforts. This position assists with wildlife population surveys and hunting and fishing access activities. The selected individuals will perform a variety of land management and maintenance duties associated with the development and upkeep of regional office properties, Access Yes-managed lands, Wildlife Habitat Management Areas (WHMAs) and Public Access Areas (PAAs).

The positions will be located in Green River, Wyoming and Sheridan, Wyoming.

• Assist Regional Access Coordinators with sign maintenance, hunting and fishing season presence and landowner relations
• Assist Regional Habitat and Access Coordinators with WHMA and PAA maintenance, and habitat enhancement projects
• Communicate effectively and provide customer service with landowners, sportsmen and Department personnel
• Assist with wildlife surveys and wildlife data collection
• Support hunting and fishing public outreach efforts
• Perform habitat and access improvement projects on Department-owned and managed lands
• Assist with general maintenance of WHMA’s, PAA’s and Access Yes properties
• Work collaboratively with regional staff and other partners to complete assigned projects

Preference may be given to those with, or working towards a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, range management, biology, zoology, or ichthyology. As well as those with a farm or ranch background.

• Fence construction and maintenance – wildlife, elk fence, stack yards and stock fence
• Operation and maintenance of farm equipment (tractors, skid steers, backhoes, excavators)
• Knowledge and experience in farming and ranching.
• Weed and plant identification
• WHMA and PAA maintenance (roads, parking areas, boat ramps, boat docks, and comfort stations, etc)
• ATV/UTV operation and maintenance
• Operation of power tools, hand tools, 4x4 pickups and trailers
• Assist and conduct game check stations and take biological data, including disease samples such as CWD and brucellosis from hunter-harvested deer and elk.
• Work with regional wardens and biologists to assist with any wildlife-related issues.
• Knowledge and interpretation of legal land descriptions.
• Self-starter able to work independently and exercise independent judgment with little direct supervision.
• Well-developed communication skills (written and oral).
• Knowledge of general outdoor skills.
• Skill in the use of GPS, reading maps, and using phone mapping applications.
• Knowledge of statutes and regulations related to hunting and fishing.
• Knowledge of wildlife management, natural resource management, range management, wetland management, and habitat management concepts, principles and practices.
• Skill in organizing, planning, prioritizing, and managing time
• Ability to listen, be a team player and communicate with other employees and the public

• Ability to work early mornings, late evenings and weekend work will be required
• Positions may require extended stays in campers
• Must be able to lift 50lbs
• Excellent physical condition and ability to work outside and perform under adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain, often for long periods.
• Will be required to work alone in the field in a rural setting.
• Ability to positively work with and facilitate relationships with the ranching and hunting communities and other interested individuals as a team.
• Ability to use small power and non-power hand tools.
• Able to safely operate a 4-wheel drive pickup and ATV in various terrain and road conditions

• Uniform, rain gear, and other necessary gear will be provided when in the field.
• Potential duration of employment March 16 - November 15.
