Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician; HEMT III

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities across Maryland. • Performing standard preventive maintenance services such as oil changes, lubricating chassis joints, and overall vehicle inspection.
• Conducting electronic engine analyses and specialized tests (cylinder compression, computer malfunctions, fuel pump manifold vacuum, etc.).
• Checking repairs or replacing various standard components and subassemblies such as ball joints, brake lining, and other integral parts.
• Conducting commercial vehicle inspections of vehicles over 26,000 lbs.
• Diagnosing and repairing emission failures.
• Road testing all equipment repaired before release from the shop.

Employees in this classification are considered essential and may be required to be on call 24 hours a day to maintain continuous operation of a facility. They must provide a reachable telephone number and may be called to duty during off‑hours under hazardous weather or highway conditions. Work requires physical exertion, often outdoors and may involve moving objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Employees receive supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor I or other designated official. Current vacancies are located in Baltimore City and Cecil/Harford County, MD. The established list from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies at other MDTA facilities.

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy‑duty construction equipment. Two of those years must include servicing and repairing heavy‑duty construction equipment and diesel engines.

• Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing, and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses, or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
• Completion of an accredited training program in Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may replace one and one‑half years of the general experience (program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs).
• U.S. Armed Forces military service experience may replace one year of the required education and experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
• Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may replace two years of the required education.
• Master Technician certification in one or more ASE subject areas may replace the required education.

Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in Maryland. They also must maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) during the probationary period, depending on equipment operated, and may need special endorsements for hazardous materials and tank vehicles.

Additional certifications required include the second level of the employing administration’s certification program, a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician III certification for transfers or promotions, an MAA Airfield Operators Permit if new to the Maryland Aviation Administration, and Air Conditioning Recycling and Recovery certification during probation.

Commercial Vehicle Inspectors must obtain and maintain a Commercial Vehicle Inspector’s License.
