Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is proud to be part of the provincial implementation of minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs), an initiative aimed at enhancing nursing practice and strengthening quality of care across the health system. mNPRs set the minimum number of nurses providing care to patients on a given unit. In British Columbia, mNPRs are developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) and health organizations.

Come work as an Employed Student Nurse with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)! Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for an Employed Student Nurse to join the team in Sechelt, BC.
Program DetailsThe Employed Student Nurse (ESN) program provides a nursing employment prospect to work in a clinical setting of up to 400 hours of hands‑on experience with pay. As an ESN you provide direct nursing care to both stable and unstable patients/residents/clients appropriate to the level of education and training you have received to date in your nursing program. ESN educators and unit staff support your transition from student to new graduate nurse.
LocationSechelt, BC. Sechelt is located on the traditional territories of the shíshálh (Sechelt) Nation and is approximately 50 km northwest of Vancouver. It is accessible from the mainland by a 40‑minute ferry trip between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale, followed by a 25‑minute drive along Highway 101, also known as the Sunshine Coast Highway. The community offers natural beauty, outdoor activities, parks, eateries, shops, galleries, and a golf course.
SecheltHospital
Sechelt Hospital is an acute care, 46‑bed facility located in Sechelt, British Columbia, serving over 30,000 residents of the Lower Sunshine Coast. It provides a full range of services, including Emergency care, Renal program‑community dialysis units, Mental Health and Substance Use Services, surgical services, birthing for low‑risk pregnancies, and imaging services.

- Successfully completed 2nd Year of a BScN program (or equivalent) prior to start as an ESN.
- Successfully completed at least one Adult Medical or Surgical rotation in the BScN program prior to start as an ESN.
- Continually enrolled in a recognized nursing education program in BC and in good standing.
- Registered (or eligible for registration) with BCCNM as an Employed Student Registrant (must be obtained before start).
- Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (Healthcare Provider CPR).
- Final preceptorship date of nursing program must be September 2026 or later.
- Nursing students may not hold ESN positions with more than one health authority concurrently.
- Equivalency will be determined with the nursing education program in which the student is registered.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Organize assigned workload and set priorities.
- Think critically and problem‑solve.
- Handle effectively a variety of internal and external contacts, including co‑workers, physicians, community agency representatives, patients/residents/clients, and families.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
