Overview

State Fair Community College is seeking a full-time Agriculture Instructor with expertise in Agronomy to join the faculty on the Sedalia campus. This position primarily involves teaching face-to-face courses using the college’s 200-acre demonstration farm to provide hands-on, applied learning experiences. Instruction may also extend to online formats and other campus locations as assigned by Associate Dean. The ideal candidate will combine deep subject knowledge with a passion for student success and workforce readiness in the agricultural industry.

Job Functions
  • Teach courses primarily in the Agronomy Program, including soils, crop and forage sciences, nutrient management, and precision agriculture. May also teach other agriculture-related courses as assigned.
  • Deliver instruction in lecture/lab settings and across various formats, including in-person, hybrid, online, and Web Conference, with flexibility in scheduling across different parts of term.
  • Provide high-quality instruction and assess student performance while upholding academic standards and program integrity. Foster a student-centered learning environment that supports retention and achievement through timely, constructive feedback.
  • Effectively communicate course content using multimedia tools and diverse instructional strategies to engage today’s learners.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and instructional improvement. Take on leadership roles such as mentoring adjuncts, serving as lead instructor, supporting student organizations, and participating in committees.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organized classroom and lab environment, ensuring all equipment meets institutional and industry safety standards.
  • Fulfill full-time faculty responsibilities, including teaching a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester, maintaining at least five student office hours per week, and being available during standard college operating hours (Monday–Friday).
  • Support student clubs and participate in campus, community, and public service activities, which may occasionally require overnight travel.

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in an agriculture-related field required, with strong preference for a degree in Crop Science, Soil Science, Agronomy, or closely related disciplines. A master’s degree is highly preferred.
  • Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and/or related specialty certifications in agronomy, soils or crops
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in the agriculture industry related to the program of study.
  • Demonstrated expertise in soils, field crop/forage production, nutrient management, and integrated pest management.
  • Knowledge of regional agricultural production practices is required.
  • Experience with precision agriculture technologies, including the use of ground equipment, drones, and mapping software, is highly desired.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, along with a passion for teaching, a student-centered mindset, and a commitment to the mission and vision of SFCC.
  • Familiarity with community college students and experience applying active learning strategies, supporting retention, completion, and outcomes assessment.
  • Previous teaching experience at the community college level, especially in agronomy, is preferred.

  • Ability and willingness to collaborate and provide agronomic advice to the farm manager, including but not limited to nutrient recommendations, forage and crop rotations and integrated pest management strategies that support the demonstration farm.

  • Proficiency in using technology and digital tools to enhance instruction and course management.
