JOB SUMMARY

Surgical Technologists are allied health professionals with specialized education who function as members of the surgical team in the role of scrub person. LPN Scrub Techs are LPN that receive on-the-job training. In collaboration with the surgical team members providing surgical care to patients, they ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

They will work within their scope of practice.

The Surgical Technologist reports directly to the RN circulator, charge nurse and/or team leader.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: Graduate of Surgical Technologist program accredited through ARC/STSA or LPN with on-the-job training.
  • Licensure/Certification: Must have a valid, current MO Scrub Technologist Diploma;
    Certified Scrub Tech or MO LPN License. BLS certification required within 6 months of employment.
  • Work Experience: Successful completion of hospital orientation.
RESPONSIBILITIES / JOB DUTIES
  • Gather checks and open supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Set up the sterile back table and mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for procedure.
  • Perform the surgical scrub, donning and doffing of gown and gloves and personal protective equipment, and assist with gowning/gloving others. Maintain highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure. Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization at the end of case.
  • Demonstrate teamwork through communication, cooperation, coordination, and conflict resolution with others and implement multidisciplinary actions to provide continuity of care.
  • Provide for accurate care and handling of specimens.
  • Follow all standards and policies providing safe patient care as in surgical counts, handwashing, sterile consciousness, time outs and debriefs, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Direct patient contact, possible exposure to infections, communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens.

    • Handle emergency or crisis situations.
    • Occasionally subject to irregular hours.
    • Subject to frequent interruptions.
    • Comply with ADA guidelines.
    • Provide on‑call response time as dictated per unit policy.
