Director of Religious Education

Join the Archdiocese of San Antonio as the Director of Religious Education (also known as Director of Faith Formation). In this role you will lead the children’s religious education program, supervise and work with volunteers, and coordinate healthy religious programs for children and youth. You will design, develop, direct, and evaluate a total parish catechetical program while providing leadership to assist the parish community in building a solid foundation for spirituality, Christian living, ministry, and outreach.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the parish religious education program and organize resources for the pastor.
  • Oversee curriculum planning and the selection of texts from Kindergarten through high school.
  • Schedule interviews with parents/family before the start of the Faith Formation program for children receiving the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation.
  • Coordinate family retreats with approval of the pastor.
  • Coordinate the RCIA program for adults and children.
  • Create and maintain a religious education program calendar.
  • Oversee the registration process, including Religious Education Program on Sundays.
  • Provide appropriate environments for catechetical and spiritual growth.
  • Ensure proper supervision of indoor and outdoor facilities during program times.
  • Produce handbooks and other communications for youth, parents, and catechists.
  • Ensure Faith Formation activities align with parish activities.
  • Recruit and supervise catechists and volunteers, providing ongoing development opportunities.
  • Assist each catechist with establishing and implementing their plan for diocesan catechist formation and maintain catechist records.
  • Work with the Diocesan Department of Catholic Formation and represent the parish at meetings and conferences related to religious education and administrative development.
  • Ensure Safe Environment requirements, policies, and mandates for the Parish Faith Program comply with Office for Child and Youth Protection.
  • Meet regularly with the pastor to discuss matters related to Parish Faith Formation and sacramental preparation.
  • Plan and organize the entire year of the Parish Faith Formation Program in accordance with the solemnities of the Parish/Catholic Church, focusing on five topics:
    Sacred Scripture and the four pillars of the Catechism of the Church—Creed, Liturgy and Sacraments, Christian Morality, and Prayer.
  • Schedule dates for First Recollection retreats for Penance and First Holy Communion, First Penance and First Holy Communion as directed by the pastor.
  • Schedule and coordinate sacramental meetings for parents for the Sacraments.
  • Cooperate with parish staff to develop and implement parish programs and use of facilities.
  • Create and monitor an annual budget in consultation with the pastor and parish finance council.
  • Evaluate programs to determine strengths, areas for improvement, and future needs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Supervise seminarians training at the parish.
  • Maintain the Religious Education Database.
  • Conduct a year‑end inventory of the Faith Formation Office (books, items, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in religious education, religious studies, or another relevant field.
  • Experience:

    Several years of teaching experience.
  • Active member of a Roman Catholic Church required.
  • Knowledge of group dynamics and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, parishioners, and the public.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills
  • Must be a practicing Catholic and active in the parish; able to work well with people from all walks of life.
  • Experience with multicultural education and culturally responsive practices; commitment to anti‑racism.
  • Mission‑focused with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible team player, capable of collaborating with lay leaders and other staff.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to present information and respond to questions from the public.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage a budget.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including Sundays and evenings.
  • Read, analyze, and write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Maintain confidentiality and solve practical problems based on written or oral instructions.
  • Adapt to changing schedules or routines.
