Job SummaryProvide appropriate, efficient and timely pre‑hospital basic life support care and transportation of the sick and injured in accordance with local, state, national and Acadian Ambulance standards of practice.
EquipmentAmbulance; stretcher; folding stretcher; scoop stretcher; long and short spine boards and KED; spinal immobilization equipment; radios and computerized communications equipment; splinting devices; suction devices; bandaging materials; oxygen bottles and tubings; basic airway management devices; intravenous fluid therapy equipment; fire extinguisher; simple extrication devices; simple mechanics tools; blood pressure cuff and stethoscope; patient restraints; simple traction devices;
Other medical and related equipment items not specifically listed may be added as new items are introduced.
- Conduct a careful examination of the patient for signs and symptoms of illness/injury and assist other medical personnel as necessary.
- Administer prompt and efficient basic life support care within the limits of licensure or certification in accordance with approved protocols prior to and during transport.
- Handle the patient carefully to and from the ambulance.
- Transport the patient safely and efficiently to the medical facility.
- Transfer patient and patient care information to receiving personnel at the destination.
- Document all aspects of patient condition and treatment on EMS run reports and complete other required forms.
- Conduct regular unit inventory and equipment testing to ensure all equipment is present, clean and in working order.
- Upon completion of transport, complete all assigned duties to place the ambulance and equipment back in service.
- Maintain full knowledge of the ambulance’s basic life support equipment and its proper use.
- Report all needed repairs to maintenance departments and supervisors.
- When necessary, use basic extrication tools and procedures to gain access to the patient.
- Control the patient’s surroundings to minimize further danger and manage bystander actions.
- Operate and drive the ambulance safely and efficiently, following company driving guidelines.
- Follow FCC regulations when communicating via electronic communications equipment.
- Attend all mandatory meetings as scheduled.
- Complete assigned station and ground duties.
- Order supplies and equipment from Central Supply.
- Perform ambulance cleaning duties (washing, waxing, interior and exterior cleaning).
- Complete all required company reports and logs.
- Precept EMT-Basic students and new employees as directed by an Approved Field Training Officer.
- Meet all qualifications, requirements, functions and responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Technician – Basic job description.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Stand, walk, sit, talk or hear, use hands to finger or handle, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms, taste or smell – all as required. Weight lifting up to 50 pounds for over 2/3 of the time may also be required. Vision requirements include color vision, distance vision, close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
WorkEnvironment
Hazardous materials calls, electrical emergencies, vehicular accidents, outdoor emergency settings, hurricanes, tornadoes, industrial accidents, and other conditions where heavy equipment is used. Exposure to wet, humid, toxic, chemical, outdoor weather, extreme temperature, electrical shock, explosives, radiation, and vibration may occur.
Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED.
- National and/or State certification as an Emergency Medical Technician per state requirements.
- Current CPR certification as established by the American Heart Association.
- Current and valid state‑issued driver’s license (equivalent to a Louisiana Class “D”).
- Proficient reading, writing, and professional communication skills; ability to write simple correspondence and reports.
- Knowledge of company protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.
- Ability to drive large vehicles in normal and adverse conditions.
- Maintain social, ethical, and organizational norms.
- Achieve thorough completion of all task details, regardless of size.
- Demonstrate strong personal motivation and sense of ownership.
- Maintain urgency and professionalism with patients, co‑workers, emergency service providers, healthcare workers, and the general public.
