Service Technician
Starting Salary: $20.69/HR
Pay Group: U5
Performs a variety of functions related to installing and disconnecting electric and water meters.
Essential Duties- Installs and disconnects electric and water meters
- Rechecks electric and water meter readings
- Reads city electric and water meters
- Patrols circuits during outages checking for wires that are down
- Programs AMR electric and water meters
- Responds to "wires down" calls and guards wire for utilities
- Reports unsafe/missing vehicles and equipment
- Maintains vehicles and equipment that are assigned
- Attends in‑house and out‑of‑house electric education and training sessions
- Observes safety rules and procedures
- May act as Dispatcher for the Utilities Warehouse in the absence of the normal Dispatcher
- May deliver mail to and from the post office for City Hall
- May hand‑deliver important messages for Council Members, Mayor and City Manager
- May have to perform 2nd man on call duties as required
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned
Knowledge of the city's electric system, including different types of voltages and installations, service line and its appurtenances, and water and electric meter locations.
Physical ability to carry/climb a 5’ ladder weighing 20 pounds; kneel; shovel; turn shutoff valves requiring 30 pound rotational force; perform work outdoors in hot, cold, and/or wet weather; and learn to perform CPR.
Ability to read, record, and report water and electricity use accurately; repair and service electrical meter boxes and lines; work on rotating duty call; recognize dangerous situations and deal with them; work under stress (e.g., irate customers); work with citizens in a pleasant and courteous manner; know and apply safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents; repeat messages and wording without loss of meaning (involves having a clear and concise radio voice and good hearing and language comprehension);
work with limited supervision; pay close attention to detail; and maintain a Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record.
Other: may handle toxic and/or hazardous materials or work in areas where such materials may be stored and work under prolonged periods of stress due to the hazards of electricity.
Acceptable Experience and TrainingHigh school graduation, or its equivalent; two years of electrical utility experience, disconnecting, connecting, and reading both electric and water meters; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses Required- State of Texas Class C driver's license
- CPR Certification
