OverviewThe EH&S Coordinator works with plant leadership to ensure state, federal, and corporate safety regulations and policies are followed at the Selah and Wapato, WA facilities. Reports to the Plant Manager, Selah, with a dotted line to the Plant Manager, Wapato. Responsible for coordinating all Environmental, Health and Safety activities and for implementing, improving, and overseeing the training program for all new hires and current staff.
Responsibilities– Safety
- Ensure compliance with Sun Rype Health and Safety standards, federal and state health and safety regulations, and maintain records according to guidelines.
- Implement and enforce best practices and procedures for plant safety.
- Collaborate with department leaders to ensure safety requirements are followed and employees adhere to safety protocols.
- Ensure contractors, vendors, and temp labor comply with GMPs and safety requirements.
- Train new and current employees on safety policies, procedures, and relevant regulations in coordination with Human Resources.
- Coordinate and co-present annual safety training with plant leadership; lead and facilitate technical training programs.
- Develop training programs and materials and assess training effectiveness.
- Facilitate safety trainings such as LOTO, OSHA, Forklift, MEWP, Ammonia, Ergonomics, etc., and monitor training results and feedback.
- Participate in OSHA inspections and maintain required OSHA certifications and up-to-date safety procedures and chemical regulations.
- Coordinate emergency action planning and annual evacuation drills; maintain Ammonia Awareness procedures.
- Identify and control hazardous conditions; coordinate removal of hazards; conduct risk assessments; analyze health and safety data for root cause and corrective actions.
- Review and recommend changes to activities; maintain Velocity
EHS system data; participate in incident investigations with safety committee. - Lead/co-lead safety committee meetings and maintain safety procedures (Steam, Fire, Chemical areas) and participate in Safe Quality Foods program; develop and report on KPIs.
- Perform other duties as necessary to administer the health and safety program.
- Develop prevention and remedies for pollution incidents; coordinate waste, recycling, and water conservation programs.
- Perform other environmental tasks as needed.
Follow plant GMPs at all times; ensure work area is secure and that Environmental and Safety procedures meet SQF code requirements.
Physical Requirements- Physical ability to work in a production setting. Frequent: stand, walk, climb stairs, stoop, bend, push/pull; use of hands to operate machinery; exposure to wet, humid conditions and temperature fluctuations.
- Occasional: lift up to 50 pounds; squatting, kneeling; ability to reach above shoulder height; ability to wear a respirator; confined space entry using LOTO.
- Associate’s degree in Health and Safety preferred; high school diploma required.
- 2-5 years of experience in environmental, health and safety programs in a manufacturing environment.
- Availability to work any shift and be on call for on-the-job accidents/incidents.
- Genuine interest in environmental and safety issues and relevant legislation; effective trainer; strong communication and leadership skills; organizational skills; continuous improvement mindset.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to work safely and from heights.
- OSHA 30 Hour for General Industry or similar EHS certification preferred; strong knowledge of lockout/tagout and confined space; experience with hazard identification and abatement; certified trainer in Fall Protection, LOTO, Confined Space, Hot Work, Hazardous Materials; current Occupational First Aid Level 2; WA State Driver’s License.

Interact with all employees; especially production supervisors, maintenance supervisors, and plant managers at both facilities.
