The position is expected to coordinate and perform materials analysis, metallurgy evaluations, heat treatment verifications, and fracture analysis for internally manufactured and purchased parts. Central activities include hardness testing, heat treatment case depth analysis, report writing, failure analysis, root cause analysis, and problem solving. Typical metallurgist functions include determination of conformance to print for product or process function issues, proposals for continuous improvement of heat treatment processes, and cross‑functional communication of suspect part risk analysis results.
This person will work closely with product engineering, warranty engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and supplier quality departments. They will train, lead, and manage the performance of lab technicians. Interface includes internal Borg Warner team members, suppliers, and customers to coordinate issue resolution.
- Coordinate and perform metallurgical and failure analysis for conformance to program requirements, support product development (design, fabrication, heat treating, testing, PPAP), supplier & BW internal quality, and warranty investigations. Perform troubleshooting, make recommendations, accept & reject outcomes, write and publish reports.

- Propose alternative solutions to metallurgical issues.
- Provide component analysis for Production Part Approval Process (PPAP).
- Existing products:
- Provide root cause analysis of part fracture modes.
- Analyze metal parts for conformance to print. Approve or reject materials deviations based on metallurgical and materials analysis.
- Complete metallurgical evaluations and write metallurgy reports.
- Maintain metallurgical lab equipment, inventory, and 5S expectations.
- Proactive equipment maintenance.
- Procure new equipment.
- Collaborate and develop relationships with external vendors, labs, equipment suppliers, and service resources.

Duties & Responsibilities (Training, process improvements, raw material certification review & approval, develop written procedures, annual CQI‑9 Heat Treat System Assessment):- Communicate effectively among peers, internal & external customers, and suppliers.
- Sectioning, mounting, & polishing.
- Microstructural assessment.
- Use of light microscopes and imaging techniques.
- Knowledge of Scanning Electron Microscopy.
- Hardness testing and case depth.
- Spectrometry.
- Powder metal density.
- Metallurgy lab process improvement, lab documentation, and records maintenance.
- Relevant metallurgical industry standards & benchmarking best practices.
- Other duties as assigned by Quality Leadership.
- Metallurgical and heat treatment knowledge.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, & PowerPoint required.
- Proficiency with LWO (Lab Work Order System), Siemens Teamcenter PLM, L2L (Leading2
Lean) manufacturing software, SharePoint document control, Workday & UKG, customer portals, and other software. - Demonstrated leadership attributes and ability to train and lead lab technicians.
Travel is occasionally required, up to 5% of the time.

- Lift shoulder high up to 35 lbs. or bend over to floor level on occasion.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, & caustic chemicals.
- Work on occasion in non‑climate‑controlled or moderate noise‑level environments.
