DescriptionEntry salary: $39,819.98 (U.S. hourly rate $19.14.)
The purpose of this position is to operate equipment utilizing mechanisms that are somewhat complex to operate, requiring more dexterity and finesse, as well as the operation of highly‑specialized equipment, and/or larger vehicles requiring a higher level of skill to drive and maneuver in and around confined spaces. This is the second level in a series of three levels of Heavy Equipment Operators distinguished by increasing levels of scope, independence, responsibility and decision‑making.
Positions at the “II” level require possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Job Duties
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment including skid steers, mowing tractors, wheel loaders, etc. in the operation of the transfer station, material recovery facility, and mulching operation.
- Drive roll‑off container truck to haul materials to and from work sites: maneuver and position vehicle to allow for proper alignment of containers to be placed or retrieved; connect container to truck and operate winch, checking for proper load distribution and support for the vehicle; secure all doors, gates, and fasteners to prevent spillage or loss of load during transport; and dump material at appropriate location.
- Operate skid steer, backhoe‑mounted loader, and wheel loaders of similar size to load and/or move gravel, dirt, sand, mulch, recyclables, and other materials for smaller projects and loads; use skid steer to clear debris or fix small ruts or issues around county facilities.
- Operate dump trucks or roll‑off to haul gravel or other materials to other county facilities.
- Inspect and prepare equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day: perform light maintenance on equipment, which includes refueling, and refilling lubricants; clean vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; and secure vehicle after use.
- Perform manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and repair projects: lift, move, load, and unload materials, equipment, tools, and supplies; dig ditches, trenches, and holes manually or utilizing power equipment; shovel, rake, spread, compact, and level dirt, rock, asphalt, cement, and other materials; retrieve supplies, materials, tools, equipment and other items and run various errands as needed; collect, transport, load and unload materials, supplies, tools, and equipment to and from the worksite;
remove litter and debris from around work area or Solid Waste facilities. - Use mowing and landscape equipment to do lawn maintenance around Solid Waste facilities.
- Serve as backup to scale operator and scale house attendant.
- Serve as backup office personnel.
- Takes deposits to bank.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the organization’s operations, services, and policies.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations regarding commercial vehicles.
- Strong maintenance knowledge.
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment.
- Physical ability to work in hazardous or inclement climate.
- Good customer service skills.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Ability to operate straight‑drive and automatic trucks.
High School Diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses, Certifications, or RegistrationsRequired: Valid CDL Class B with Airbrakes and no restrictions.

Physical DemandsThe work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
