Position OverviewOperate the school bus under all types of weather conditions including fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice. Transport students and other authorized persons safely and efficiently on regular and special education routes, field trips, extra‑curricular and/or special activity trips as authorized by the school district officials. Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and community groups.
Qualifications Education & Experience- High School Diploma or GED
- Any combination of sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed in this position description.
- Valid Washington Driver's License.
- Successful completion of a comprehensive driver course (provided by the school district)
- Class B CDL with passenger, school bus endorsement and air brake restrictions removed.
- Current First Aid/CPR Certificate; or successful completion of the District's First Aid/CPR class.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must have at least five (5) years prior driving experience.
- Must not have been convicted of any violation of law involving physical molesting, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
- Must have a driving record relatively free of traffic violations and accidents. Applicants whose abstracts show convictions for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, negligent driving or hit and run will not be considered for employment.
- Must provide a five‑year abstract of their personal and commercial driving record or sign an authorized form so that the school district may send for one. Must have less than three speeding and/or rules of the road violations or any criminal traffic convictions.
- Must pass drug/alcohol screening and maintain this requirement through random drug and/or alcohol testing.
- Pre‑employment requirements include a Washington State Patrol check and FBI clearance.
- Knowledge of first aid.
- Knowledge of safe driving practices.
- Knowledge of provisions of Washington Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the school bus transportation.
Indoor and outdoor environment; regular exposure to all types of weather conditions.
Physical Abilities- Must be able to move from a seated position in a sixty‑five passenger school bus or the largest bus operated to the emergency door, open the emergency door, and exit the bus within twenty‑five seconds.
- Ability to pass DOT physical and remain current with this requirement.
- Must have sufficient strength and agility to move about in an overturned bus as required to provide assistance to students evacuating the bus.
- Must possess sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door.
- Hearing capability sufficient to detect and distinguish traffic sounds occurring from any direction outside the bus, allowing adequate time for defensive or evasive action.
- Vision: 20/40 in best eye, with or without correction, approximate 140 degrees peripheral vision, and adequate depth perception.
- Eye coordination to avoid diplopia; color vision adequate to distinguish the colors of red, green and amber of traffic lights.
- Dexterity of hands, fingers and feet to operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State School Bus Specifications.
