The Convenience Center Attendant I is responsible for supervising and operating solid waste convenience centers throughout Sevier County. The primary areas of responsibility include assisting individuals with the proper disposal of household trash and debris, informing the public about regulations regarding recyclable and hazardous materials, and ensuring the cleanliness, security, and maintenance of the center. This position also involves monitoring facility conditions, reporting needed repairs or equipment issues to the Solid Waste Director, and enforcing waste disposal regulations.
Job performance for this position will be evaluated by the Director of Solid Waste Management based on the cleanliness and organization of assigned convenience centers, ability to interact effectively with the public, knowledge of solid waste regulations, and physical ability to perform job duties in various weather conditions.
- Opens and closes the convenience center according to established schedules and ensures the security of the site.
- Assists individuals with the proper disposal of household waste and recyclable items and directs them to the appropriate disposal locations.
- Inspects waste materials to ensure compliance with disposal regulations and advises individuals on proper disposal methods for restricted materials such as hazardous waste, rock, wood, tires, and carpets.
- Coordinates collection activities with solid waste truck drivers based on the center’s usage levels.
- Notifies appropriate personnel when landfill materials need to be collected.
- Directs traffic to the proper containers when garbage disposal trucks are emptying containers to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Prevents unauthorized use of the convenience center by contractors and other individuals and informs them of the proper disposal sites.
- Cleans the area around collection containers and organizes recyclable materials left at the center.
- Performs minor repairs on equipment, fences, and facilities located at the convenience center.
- Notifies the Solid Waste Director of any significant repair needs or maintenance issues.
- Monitors site conditions and ensures the center remains clean, organized, and in compliance with solid waste regulations.
- Addresses customer inquiries and concerns, attempting to resolve issues or escalating significant problems to the Director of Solid Waste Management.
- Ensures compliance with all safety guidelines and operational procedures related to waste disposal.
- Assists with emergency response and cleanup efforts during inclement weather or natural disasters as needed.
- Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
- Eighth-grade education or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Tennessee driver’s license and to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
- Ability to pass a physical and drug screen administered through a licensed physician.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Competencies- Knowledge of solid waste regulations, including hazardous materials and recyclable items.
- Knowledge of the proper handling and disposal of recyclable items and hazardous materials.
- Knowledge of disposal sites for construction debris, wood, rock, tires, and other materials not permitted within the center.
- Knowledge of routine preventive maintenance and repair activities related to solid waste convenience centers.
- Ability to interact professionally and tactfully with the public, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to maintain the convenience center in a clean and organized manner and coordinate the timely collection of household debris and recyclable items.
- Strong decision-making skills to respond appropriately to unexpected or new situations.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply operational rules, regulations, and memoranda related to solid waste operations.
- Ability to consistently adhere to established schedules, policies, and operational procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public, co-workers, and supervisory personnel.
- Demonstrated capability to solve practical problems and handle various situations where standard procedures may not apply.
- Commitment to ethical business practices and responsible behavior both on and off the job.
- Ability to work as part of a team to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the convenience center.
