Triage Registered Nurse, Perinatal Center

Full Time, 75 Hours Per Pay Period, Day Shift

Perinatal Center Overview

At Fort Sanders Perinatal Center, we’re here for women with pregnancies that require extra care, and we’re ready to help you make the best healthcare decisions from conception through delivery. For more than 25 years, we’ve provided comprehensive high‑risk pregnancy services and delivered over 26,000 high‑risk babies at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. We offer a range of care services for higher‑risk pregnancies, including mothers over age 35, multiples, complications, birth defects, and issues such as diabetes or hypertension, or pregnancies after infertility.

Department Description

At LeConte Women’s Healthcare Associates, we specialize in the treatment of the whole female patient across all stages of life – from birth control education, healthy hormone management, and annual exams to guiding you on your pregnancy journey. With more than 60 years of combined medical experience, our expert healthcare team is ready to provide you with excellent care. For women facing a high‑risk pregnancy, we partner with the perinatologists at Fort Sanders Perinatal Center.

Position Summary

The Triage Nurse organizes and coordinates the intake/admission/triage process. The nurse will answer and process all calls within the practice based on the needs of the caller. The Triage Nurse reports to the Clinical Supervisor, Office Manager, and Operations Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Answer all calls and triage as needed or receive referral inclusive of patient and insurance information based on provider contracts and staffing capacities.
  • Receive orders from MD as needed and communicate changes in patient assessment to MD and communicate additional orders to staff as appropriate. Co‑sign MD orders as needed in absence of Clinical Supervisors.
  • Receive, organize, and process faxed information as appropriate.
  • Document all calls and interventions/actions in messaging systems or charts.
  • For a triage call, conduct an initial telephone assessment of the patient using approved protocols as well as documentation from the medical record and discuss recommended action with the patient/patient representative.
  • Receive and/or generate MD orders and communicate changes to all appropriate staff as needed.
  • Communicate within office(s) as needed.
  • Provide specific ICD‑9 codes based on admitting/recertifying staff’s communication of assessment findings, if applicable.
  • Maintain current knowledge of agency policies and procedures.
  • Accurately use software(s) to create and document in clinical record, process, and retrieve information to meet patient needs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of compliance guidelines.
  • Submit and follow up timely with necessary information for obtaining authorization of services to be provided.
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures, objectives, and quality assessment programs as well as safety, environmental, and infection control standards in the performance of work duties.
  • Attend meetings as required and participate on committees as needed.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards. Complete required education assignments annually. Work toward achieving goals and objectives, and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with diploma (ADN), BSN, or MSN.

Minimum Experience: Minimum of three years of medical office triage experience preferred. Excellent customer service skills required. Experience with Basic Microsoft Office preferred.

Licensure Requirement: Valid Tennessee Nursing license.
