the organization

this position will be located in seward, alaska, at the alutiiq pride marine institute (apmi), a branch of crrc. Crrc is a nonprofit inter-tribal fish and wildlife commission established to address environmental and natural resources issues of concern to its seven member tribes, located in the chugach region of southcentral alaska. These include chenega ira council, native village of eyak (cordova), port graham village council, nanwalek ira council, qutekcak native tribe (seward), tatitlek village ira council, and valdez native tribe.

description

this position serves in the chugach region ocean monitoring (crom) program, a specialized marine ecological and biochemical laboratory. Assays conducted in this laboratory will focus on ocean chemistry monitoring, and may include shellfish biotoxin monitoring, phytoplankton identification, and general husbandry of algae, bivalve, and fish species.

primary duties and responsibilities
  • conduct sample analysis, as well as light maintenance for laboratory equipment, data processing, inventories of samples, and day to day purchasing and stocking of laboratory supplies.
  • assist in project development, coordination, logistics, and supply procurement.
  • travel to rural coastal areas to assist in field collection of organisms, samples, and data.
  • contribute to grant proposal development by drafting relevant sections; prepare and present novel research findings through oral presentations and written manuscripts for both public and professional audiences’ assist with report preparation and manuscript submission.
  • perform general husbandry and care for onsite algae, bivalve, and fish species as needed.
  • maintain accurate and organized laboratory records, logs, and documentation in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards.
  • ensure adherence to safety protocol, including proper handling and disposal of chemicals and biological materials.
  • attend meetings and participate in required training sessions to maintain compliance and stay updated on protocols.

educational & experience requirements
  • bachelor’s degree (or higher) in chemistry, biological sciences, or a related field.
  • equivalent professional experience may substitute for a degree.
skills and abilities
  • basic knowledge of marine chemistry and ecology, particularly life history and physiology of marine fish and invertebrates.
  • basic knowledge of hazmat/osha policies and practices.
  • experience with analytical chemistry and laboratory research, including data collection, sample processing, analysis, and reporting.
  • experience with ocean acidification and/or marine sampling analysis preferred.
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • excellent computer skills.
  • ability to generate and interpret statistical, biological, and physiological data from novel sample sources, and to prepare graphical and tabular presentation of findings.
  • ability to problem solve, collect and record data.
  • ability to research and prepare grant proposals.
  • ability to analyze and interpret complex data and information.
  • ability to work independently and collaboratively with a wide variety of personalities and personnel across the state (tribal, private, state, and federal resource agencies) at a broad range of levels in a fast-paced work environment.
  • familiarity with chugach region tribes and cultures.
