Under the direction of the Assistant Principal and Special Education Coordinator, assist certificated teachers in reinforcing instruction to individuals or small groups of students; monitor and report student progress; perform a variety of clerical duties in support of the academic program; other related duties as required. The Special Education Aide will support the instructional program for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing (DHH) students in an elementary school setting.
This role requires the use of American Sign Language (ASL) and English on a continuing basis to facilitate communication between students, staff, and peers.
- Support and maintain classroom policies.
- Monitor and support scholars as needed; supervision supports needed for transitions or unstructured times such as recess as needed; direct activities for individuals or small groups of students to reinforce instruction as directed by the teacher.
- Assist in the distribution and collection of materials, and in the administration and scoring of a variety of assignments and tests.
- Assist in the implementation of the IEP as directed.
- Perform routine clerical duties; operate equipment including computers and copy machines.
- Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly, patient attitude and general guidance.
- Confer with teachers as needed concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
- Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
- May require assisting with students’ personal needs, including toileting, in conjunction with site nursing staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Strong record‑keeping techniques.
- AA Degree, 24‑48 semester units of higher education in child development preferred.
- Proficiency in ASL strongly preferred.
