Overview
Position Title: Engineering Technician 3
Location: Shakopee, MN 55379
Job Duration: 12-Month Contract
Base pay range: $30.00/hr - $33.43/hr
This position is in a lab environment (not a clean room) and involves working with engineers to build prototypes, support moderate production levels of fiber optic products, and assist in developing and improving manufacturing processes. Occasional inspection of plastic and stamped components is required, with accurate data recording and documentation.
Work Schedule & Environment- Shift: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM or 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM (flexible start at 8:00 AM)
- Work Environment: Lab room (not a clean room)
- Standard schedule Monday–Friday with occasional overtime on weekends as required
- Build samples of fiber optic products and support moderate production assembly
- Assemble fiber optic cables (up to 25 ft in length; 40 lb boxes) including connecting, testing, and verifying performance
- Complete prototypes and production assemblies within required timelines
- Collect, read, and record product test data in internal systems, Microsoft Excel, Word, or Google Sheets
- Conduct light inspections and contamination-type testing (measuring light transfer through cables)
- Provide feedback and suggestions on manufacturing processes and product designs; assist in performing failure analysis
- Support inspection measurements of plastic and stamped metal parts using inspection equipment and record data in Excel or Google Sheets
- Communicate issues promptly to engineers or operations leads
- Exhibit competency with a broad range of manufacturing tools, lab test equipment, and fiber optic products (training provided where needed)
- Follow department safety and efficiency programs
- Complete training in lab processes, procedures, and test methods as required
- Collaborate effectively with engineers and technicians in a team-oriented lab environment (lab room, not a clean room)
- Understand internal and external customer expectations regarding fiber optic products
- May train and mentor other technicians or operators
- Associate’s degree in a related curriculum such as Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electronic Systems Technology, Metrology, or equivalent experience in a similar industrial organization
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a technician in an engineering, production, or manufacturing environment
- Solid written and verbal communication skills in English
- Good eye-hand coordination to build fiber optic products and handle small components
- Moderate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) or Google Sheets, with prior data entry experience
- Skilled in planning, organization, and attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
- Experience working with fiber optic cable assembly or electrical wire products
- Familiarity with contamination testing and light transfer measurement
- Previous experience in prototype development, NPI (new product introduction), or lab/manufacturing environments
- Experience working with smaller component assembly environments
