Head of Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering – Fall 2026

The College of Engineering (CEN) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applicants for the position of the Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CHBE) starting Fall 2026. The college seeks a visionary academic leader with responsibilities of ensuring smooth operation and sustainable development of the department.

• Doctorate in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
• Demonstrated leadership in research with an outstanding publication record.
• Exceptional teaching record and experience in academic and professional services.
• Ability to develop and articulate a long‑range vision aligned with the college’s and university’s strategic plans.

• Provide effective leadership and develop short‑term and long‑term strategies aligned with institutional plans.
• Ensure high‑quality teaching and continuous curriculum improvement.
• Facilitate innovative, multidisciplinary research and optimize research funding.
• Mentor faculty and staff to sustain excellence in teaching, research, and service.
• Promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among faculty and students.
• Lead the department in achieving recruitment goals and implement recruitment plans.
• Enhance student experience through services, visits, speakers, clubs, certifications, competitions, conferences.
• Secure research opportunities and internship positions for students.
• Engage in outreach activities and maintain collaborations with alumni, industry, government, advisory boards, and local and international professional organizations.
• Promote the department’s accomplishments via web, newsletters, and media exposure.
• Collect and analyze department data to inform decisions.
• Ensure and increase diversity and equity in faculty hiring and student recruitment.
• Maintain a positive, safe, transparent, fair, open, respectful workplace.
• Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students and parents.
• Represent faculty and staff needs to university administration.
• Oversee operations including scheduling, advising, registration, labs, budget, compliance, and risk management.
• Review faculty course releases, sabbaticals, and leave requests.
• Conduct fair faculty and staff evaluations and provide feedback.
• Evaluate faculty and staff for promotion or contract decisions.
• Lead and manage accreditation visits.
• Perform other duties as delegated by the Dean.

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering has approximately 200 undergraduate students, 15 graduate students, 12 full‑time faculty and 3 lab instructors. It offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering.

AUS is located in the Emirate of Sharjah (~15 km from Dubai). It is an independent, not‑for‑profit, coeducational university serving >5,700 students. AUS is licensed by the UAE Ministry of Education and accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation and by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Its engineering programs are accredited by ABET.
