The Africa Institute (Global Studies University), Sharjah, UAE, is seeking applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in African and African Diaspora music, musicology, or ethnomusicology within the Department of Humanities. The successful candidates must be specialized in research related to one or more regions within the African continent and are encouraged to have expertise in the African and African diaspora music.

Appointments will be for a full‑time, 9‑month position beginning in the Fall of 2025. The incumbent will teach two courses per semester in musicology and ethnomusicology – a total of four courses over the academic calendar – and will provide guidance to graduate students. The role also involves active participation in the interdisciplinary community of the Department and beyond.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in African music, musicology, or ethnomusicology at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will engage in a scholarly research program and publication, participate in committees, and supervise student research, master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. Faculty contribute to the development of an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum that offers diverse learning experiences through teaching, research, and service.

The Africa Institute is a globally oriented research, documentation, study, and teaching institution of Africa and its diaspora in the humanities and social sciences. It functions as a research‑based think‑tank and postgraduate studies centre, offering master’s and Ph.D. programmes as well as diplomas in African Languages and Translation. The Institute is now part of the newly established Global Studies University (GSU) as one of its semi‑independent institutes, each focusing on different global regions.

The Institute is led by Hoor Al Qasimi, President of GSU, and Salah M. Hassan, Dean of The Africa Institute and Chancellor of GSU.
