Responsibilities

Develop, implement and evaluate educationally effective teaching and assessment materials in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Research Methods and Applied Research. Teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Research Methods, Applied Research, and related research methodology dissertations, theses and capstone projects. Set and mark coursework, examinations and other assessment tasks in a timely fashion with clear and supportive feedback to students.

Provide pastoral support to students at all levels of study, referring them for further help and or guidance as necessary.

Deliver a maximum of 2 credit hours teaching per term, alongside supporting supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and theses for the equivalent of 1 credit hour per term. Hold an appropriate higher education teaching qualification (e.g., FHEA or similar) or commit to undertaking such at the earliest opportunity.

Research
  • Deliver a plan for personal research over the next five years in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Maritime Finance or related maritime disciplines. The plan will include writing applications for substantial research funding that enables your research ambitions to be delivered.
  • For appointment at Professor you will be an established international leader in your research field.
  • For appointment at Associate Professor you will be expected to establish international leadership in your research field within the next 5 years.
  • Carry out independent research and contribute as a team member to collective programmes of research in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Maritime Finance and related maritime disciplines, generating and disseminating high‑quality research outputs that are likely to achieve impact.
  • Lead in making direct measurable and positive contributions to SMA’s returns on the MoHESR KPIs in particular those in Pillar 4.
  • At least 2 Class

    A publications per year; in the first year at least 1 application for external funding, including an industry and an international academic partner, as well as meaningful and measurable student involvement.
  • Actively build and contribute to leadership of networks of contacts with appropriate bodies external to the University, including relevant industry employers, policymakers and charities in support of SMA as an applied industry‑oriented institution.
  • Secure industry collaboration and involvement in your own research and that of your Bachelor and Master students.
  • Actively contribute to SMA’s research themes, which include but are not limited to Maritime Logistics AND SCM, Maritime Business AND Finance, Sustainability AND Governance, Technology, Smart Ports, Digital Shipping, Maritime Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics and Digital Transformation.
  • Engage and enable research and impact beyond academia; build leadership in research and scholarly literature in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Maritime Finance and related maritime disciplines and contribute to relevant national and international conferences, workshops, colloquia and professional forums with expectations of leadership in these activities for appointment to Associate Professor.

  • Contribute as directed by senior management to organisational and administrative tasks within SMA.
  • Monitor and, where appropriate, manage teaching and/or research resources (e.g., time, materials, finance, equipment, laboratory) effectively.
  • Act consistently with collegiality, actively taking on administrative duties and participating fully in the daily working life of the Faculty, behaving as a role‑model for others.
  • Self‑manage the time demands of scholarship, teaching and research with appropriate support and guidance.
  • Actively seek to contribute to the College, Department, Faculty and University strategies.
  • Actively contribute to Faculty development and capacity building, including by mentoring and guiding less experienced colleagues.
