Join to apply for the Police Officer - Lateral role at City of Shawnee, KS.

Description

Are you a POST-certified Police Officer ready to take your career to the next level? The Shawnee Police Department is now hiring experienced, certified officers who are committed to service, integrity, and community. Kansas officers must have completed one year of service after academy graduation by the date of hire to be eligible. As a Shawnee Police Officer, you’ll play a key role in protecting and serving our community—building trust, ensuring safety, and making a real difference every day.

We value experience and offer outstanding opportunities for growth and advancement.

Career Opportunities
  • Lateral Officers may qualify for special assignments after just one year of service with Shawnee Police.
  • Promotion to Sergeant is possible after three years with Shawnee Police, provided your total law enforcement experience equals five years.
  • Certified officers may receive up to five years of prior service credit, based on experience and at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Our competitive pay structure rewards both dedication and performance. Officers receive annual step and merit increases, with the potential to earn up to $100,000 annually after eight years of service. The 2025 Police Officer Pay Plan provides a clear path for professional growth and financial success.

Daily routines require taking calls for service, patrolling to deter and detect crime, investigating crimes and complaints, citing and arresting violators, preparing and following up on reports and cases, protecting persons and property, and securing prisoners. When not responding to calls for service, the police officer is expected to use unassigned work time efficiently by self-initiating work on tasks identified by supervisory personnel as priorities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of Police Department experience after academy graduation (recruit candidates should apply through the separate PO‑Recruit job posting).
  • Must be 21 years of age by the date of employment.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Kansas residency is not required.
  • For information on automatic exclusions, visit the Police Department website.
