Volunteer tutor for disadvantaged pupils - English or maths (Sheffield)
Join Action Tutoring to support children facing disadvantage in Sheffield.
As an English or maths volunteer, you will choose one of our partner schools and work with 1–3 pupils for an hour each week over 10–20 weeks. Sessions are delivered on the school premises or online at the same time each week, supporting children preparing for SATs (ages 9–11) or GCSEs (ages 14–16). We provide training, workbooks, a DBS check and travel expenses up to £5 per session.
What you will do:
- Tutor 1–3 pupils in Year 5, 6, 7, 10 or 11.
- Commit to one hour a week for up to 20 weeks, choosing the day and time that suits you.
- Use our tutor workbooks to guide pupils through activities that boost confidence and grades.
What you will gain:
- Induction training, tutor workbooks and ongoing support.
- Develop communication, leadership and problem‑solving skills.
- Meet like‑minded volunteers in our community.
- Travel expense reimbursement (up to £5 per session).
- Free DBS check.
Who is a good fit for this volunteer role?
- Passionate about helping young people succeed, especially those facing disadvantage.
- Seeking valuable experience working with children and developing communication, mentorship and leadership skills.
- Have a busy schedule but can dedicate one hour a week, either on‑site or online.
Volunteers are expected to have solid subject knowledge in the area they wish to tutor. This may be demonstrated by a university degree, a grade B at A‑level or equivalent, or relevant experience. You must be able to explain concepts clearly and patiently and commit to supporting pupils’ academic progress.
We encourage applications from volunteers across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. (Please note this is a volunteer, unpaid position.)
