Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teacher
Responsible to
Headteacher / SENCO / Head of Inclusion
Job Purpose
To plan, deliver, and assess high-quality teaching and learning for pupils with special educational needs, ensuring they can access the curriculum, make progress, and achieve their full potential in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
Plan and deliver differentiated lessons tailored to meet a range of special educational needs, including autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, and social, emotional, and mental health needs.
Adapt teaching strategies, resources, and assessment methods to meet individual pupil needs.
Create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment that promotes engagement and positive behaviour.
Use evidence-based approaches and specialist interventions to support pupil progress.
Assessment and Progress
Assess, monitor, and track pupil progress using appropriate assessment tools.
Develop, implement, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and contribute to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Set clear targets and evaluate the impact of interventions.
Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and support.
Collaboration and Communication
Work closely with the SENCO, teaching assistants, and other professionals to provide consistent support.
Liaise with parents/carers to share progress, strategies, and concerns.
Work with external agencies such as educational psychologists, therapists, and support services.
Behaviour and Wellbeing
Support pupils’ emotional wellbeing, social development, and self-regulation.
Implement positive behaviour strategies in line with school policies.
Promote independence, resilience, and confidence in pupils.
Professional Responsibilities
Contribute to the wider life of the school and inclusive practice.
Participate in training, professional development, and staff meetings.
Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality policies at all times.
Uphold professional standards and demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion.
Person Specification
Essential
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
Experience teaching pupils with special educational needs.
Strong knowledge of SEND legislation and inclusive teaching practices.
Ability to differentiate effectively and adapt teaching approaches.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Desirable
SEN qualification or postgraduate training in special education.
Experience working with EHCPs and multi-agency professionals.
Knowledge of specific needs such as autism, speech and language difficulties, or SEMH.
Working Conditions
Full-time or part-time, term-time.
May involve working in specialist provisions or small group settings
