Overview
Schoolreaders is a national children's literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read. We recruit and match volunteers with local primary schools to support children in improving their reading and comprehension skills, as well as developing their confidence and social skills. Our service to schools is totally free!
Research shows that fewer and fewer children are reading for pleasure, so volunteers spending 1:1 time with a child to enjoy books together is invaluable. Often our volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.
Our volunteers tell us their visits to schools are often the highlight of their week; many become valuable members of the school community.
Responsibilities- Volunteer visits a matched school once a week for an hour or two during the school day to work individually with children to help improve their reading ability and enjoyment of reading.
- Support children who need extra help or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.
- Over 18; good level of written and spoken English; enjoy spending time with children.
- Commit to a minimum of one hour each week for a full year during term time (holidays can of course be taken).
- Undergo an Enhanced DBS check, which is organised and paid for by the school.
