Overview

The School of Education at the University of Sheffield is seeking to appoint an innovative and forward‐thinking University Teacher on a fixed‑term contract. The role focuses on coordinating, designing, and delivering teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including the BA/BSc in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, BA Social Sciences and MA Social Research.

Main duties and responsibilities
  • Design teaching programmes for modules, including identifying learning objectives, selecting curricula, teaching methods, resources, and study material.
  • Deliver teaching courses, preparing assessment briefs and materials, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse.
  • Coordinate team teaching, liaising with academic staff and/or graduate teaching assistants to ensure modules complement each other.
  • Engage in critically reflective teaching to enhance the design and delivery of the School's programmes.
  • Conduct course evaluation, facilitate student feedback, reflect on personal teaching and implement improvement ideas.
  • Provide pastoral support for students, acting as academic tutor.
  • Generate scholarly work and innovate in teaching and administration.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students for dissertations and other assessments.
  • Contribute to the life of the School of Education and wider University through administrative responsibilities and committee membership when appropriate.
  • Make ethical decisions and embed the University's sustainability strategy into work activities wherever possible.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Essential Requirements
  • PhD (or equivalent relevant experience) in a relevant social sciences subject.
  • Significant knowledge and expertise in quantitative or qualitative research methods aligned to social sciences or Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
  • Proven teaching ability in higher education, ideally with a recognised teaching qualification.
  • Ability to use online teaching environments such as Blackboard.
  • Ability to supervise students in independent research projects.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities.
  • Ability to work both within a team and independently.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and innovatively.
  • Excellent organisational skills, ability to undertake complex administrative duties, and a proven ability to meet deadlines.
Desirable Requirements
  • Knowledge and expertise in specific statistical programmes such as R or Stata.

Contract Information

Grade:
8. Salary: £48,822‑£58,225 per annum. Work arrangement:
Full time (35 hours). Duration: 24/8/2026 – 30/6/2027. Direct reports:
