Overview

We have an exciting opportunity in the Multidisciplinary Engineering Education (MEE) Department for someone with a passion for practical engineering education.

Working in the state of the art 20,000m² Diamond Building, you’ll be inspired by what we can offer our Engineering students. We have world leading facilities in teaching and learning, with 15 specialist laboratories designed to create a fantastic place for interdisciplinary engineering education. Within the Faculty of Engineering, one of the biggest and best engineering faculties in the UK, sits MEE, an innovative teaching group providing students with the opportunity to realise their full potential as engineering leaders with employable skills.

We are seeking a capable, highly motivated and enthusiastic multidisciplinary engineering technician to join our dynamic teaching team. You will work with colleagues to support practical teaching in the Aerospace, Civil and Mechanical Engineering team.

Main duties and responsibilities
  • Lead in the day to day running of the Machine Shop to provide a comprehensive, enthusiastic and high quality technical service to staff, students and external customers, and to ensure continued safe and reliable service excellence.
  • Take responsibility within the team to ensure facilities are run effectively and efficiently, providing a consistently high student experience.
  • Use, monitor and maintain a range of general and specialist workshop equipment to meet the needs of teaching and experimental work, ensuring minimum impact if equipment needs maintenance or repair.
  • Order equipment and workshop consumables, taking responsibility for ensuring that stock levels are maintained as required.
  • Advise and assist students in project classes, small groups, and in one-to-one training sessions, ensuring a strong emphasis on Health and Safety is maintained.
  • Lead in the organisation, set-up, maintenance, servicing, calibration, and repair of workshop equipment.
  • Carry out and document risk assessments on student and staff activities, and liaise with appropriate staff to ensure compliance with legislation and University policy.
  • Interpret technical documentation for workshop equipment, experimental procedures, and safety protocols within the theme.
  • Deliver technical training to Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs).
  • Alongside others, take responsibility in the delivery of outreach activities, such as open days, in collaboration with faculty academic and administrative staff.
  • Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Criteria

Experience equivalent to Level 3 (BTEC/A Level) qualification or with proven vocational skills and experience in a relevant science or engineering subject .

Experience of using standard workshop machine tools including lathes, milling machines, bench drills, etc.

Experience of working in an engineering workshop including the use of hand tools, workshop equipment and the safe handling and storage of materials .
