Job summary

Sheffield Hallam University is seeking an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join us as Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science, bringing specialist expertise in Blood Sciences and current or recent professional practice.

Biomedical Science is a major and growing area within our School of Biosciences and Chemistry. Our professionally focused courses prepare students for careers across biomedical and healthcare science, combining scientific knowledge with applied learning and experience of contemporary professional practice. The role will contribute particularly to Blood Sciences, including areas such as haematology, transfusion science and related disciplines.

This is an opportunity to bring your clinical and professional expertise into higher education and help develop the next generation of Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Scientists. You will teach across undergraduate, apprenticeship and postgraduate provision, translating professional experience into engaging and relevant learning. You will also lead modules, contribute to curriculum development and help maintain the quality and professional relevance of our IBMS-accredited Biomedical Science provision.

Main duties of the job Working at Senior Lecturer level, you will provide academic and professional leadership within the subject area. You will contribute to professional practice education and work-based learning, including apprenticeship provision and End Point Assessment, while building strong relationships with NHS employers, professional bodies and healthcare science networks. You will also have opportunities to contribute to scholarship, research, innovation, knowledge exchange and the development of new educational provision.

We are particularly interested in applicants with current or recent experience of NHS pathology services, together with HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist. You will have well-developed expertise in Blood Sciences and substantial experience of teaching, training, supervision or developing others through professional practice. You do not need to have followed a traditional academic career route. We welcome experienced practitioners who can bring professional credibility, clinical insight and enthusiasm for developing others into an academic environment.

You will be collaborative, adaptable and confident working across academic, clinical and professional settings. You will communicate complex scientific ideas clearly, support diverse learners and be ready to contribute to the continued development of our curricula as Biomedical Science, healthcare practice and educational technologies evolve.

About us The School of Biosciences and Chemistry provides courses in applied biological and
chemical sciences, all delivered in a supportive, research-informed environment. The
School consists of approximately 40 academic staff, active in research and with an
excellent reputation for teaching.
We deliver a wide range of courses preparing graduates for professional roles across the
bioscience, healthcare and chemistry sectors.

Our research is aimed at increasing understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of
health and disease and its application to diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. We also
excel in the application of analytical techniques to pharmaceutical, environmental and
materials chemistry.

Role purpose
To provide senior academic and professional leadership in Biomedical Science and
Healthcare Science, with particular responsibility for Blood Sciences. You will lead
and enhance inclusive, applied teaching across undergraduate, apprenticeship
and postgraduate provision. Working with students, colleagues, NHS employers
and professional bodies, you will ensure curricula reflect current clinical practice,
professional standards and IBMS accreditation requirements.
