Overview

This NIHR Clinical Lecturer post in Renal Medicine has been awarded to The School of Medicine and Population Health at The University of Sheffield as part of the prestigious UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)/ Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) integrated academic training pathway. The post forms an integral part of the clinical nephrology training programme led by the Training Program Director Dr Simon Curran.

The post represents an exciting opportunity to combine clinical training in Renal Medicine with a programme of post-doctoral research, providing 50% clinical and 50% academic time. The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that the post has the required educational and staffing approval and will come with an Academic National Training Number [NTN(A)] as part of the South Yorkshire rotation.

To be eligible you will require evidence of academic achievement and will hold a PhD or equivalent. You will have MRCP or equivalent and be eligible to hold an NTN, or may already hold an NTN, having undertaken some training at Specialty Registrar level. The post is aimed at an individual of ST3 level or above. Applicants are expected to have already gained expertise relevant to the academic strengths of the Sheffield Kidney Institute and School of Medicine and Population Heath.

With specific reference to the NIHR programme theme. This can include both preclinical (e.g. model systems, drug screens, identification of therapeutic targets) and clinical (e.g. trial design, imaging, biomarkers, disease stratification) expertise. Applicants should note that this post has been awarded within the Multiple Long Term Conditions theme.

The post is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build an academic career in renal medicine.

Objectives of the Integrated Academic Training Programme
  • To obtain a CCT in Renal Medicine
  • To undertake a programme of research
  • To identify an area of academic and clinical interest upon which to base an application for an externally-funded fellowship or a Clinician Scientist Award
  • Main duties and responsibilities

    All members of the academic department are expected to be research active. You will add critical mass in existing areas of strength or alternatively bring an additional strong clinical renal medicine research area. This post has a significant amount of protected time (6 months out of every 12) for research activities. There is ample opportunity for help, supervision and mentorship during the lectureship.

    You will be supported by Dr James Fotheringham (Academic Training Lead), your chosen supervisor and other senior colleagues. You will be expected to:

    • Contribute fully as teacher, researcher and leader, in fulfilment of the ideals of the Sheffield Academic'.
    • Contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the school.
    • Undertake assessment of students and have personal mentoring responsibilities for a small group of students on the MBChB programme.
    • Develop specific research interest to achieve the status of a national / international expert.
    • Secure peer-reviewed competitive funding for research projects.
    • Achieve an optimal standard of academic contribution by publishing research findings in high ranking scientific and specialty journals and routinely appraising the literature.
    • Obtain funding for a senior research fellowship, e.g. Clinician Scientist Award towards the end of training.
    • Gain experience and expertise in giving academic seminars and lectures.
    • Develop time-management skills, and achieve a balance between clinical, research and teaching duties throughout the appointment and beyond.
    • You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the Sheffield Academic'. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University's achievements as a whole.

    All consultant and SpR members of the Sheffield Kidney Institute are expected to participate in the delivery of undergraduate and post graduate teaching.
