Overview

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MAC) at the University of Sheffield is seeking to appoint an outstanding academic to strengthen its internationally recognised teaching in Structural Engineering. Structural Engineering is one of our main threads in our taught courses in Civil and Structural Engineering and we are seeking someone who can support our students as they learn to address major societal and global challenges.

The successful candidate will take ownership of 10 credits of the 2nd year undergraduate module “Structural Engineering Design and Appraisal”, delivering teaching and assessment whilst ensuring student learning is supported through in-person sessions, timely feedback, and online Q&A facilities. This module covers The theories and concepts of analysis and design of structural elements for the most commonly used structural materials, with a particular focus on concrete design in this par.

These are discussed along with the more prescriptive design rules included in the relevant Eurocodes.

You will also work as part of the team to support other taught modules in the Structural Engineering discipline. This will include supporting and delivering teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

There will be flexibility to reduce the time commitment with adjusted pro rata pay and duties.

Main duties and responsibilities

Demonstrate high-quality teaching practice through the effective design, delivery, assessment and evaluation of research-led teaching programmes to enable effective learning. This includes identifying learning objectives, selecting appropriate curricula, teaching methods, and resources, and determining, designing and producing appropriate study material. You will also prepare and implement student assessments, ensuring effective moderation and timely feedback.

Contribute to the design and development of programmes of study that are accessible, inclusive and contribute to the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy. This includes developing, revising and updating programme content and delivery, and ensuring compliance with quality standards, regulations and accreditation requirements.

Demonstrate continuing professional development in teaching by developing and implementing ideas for improving own teaching design, delivery and assessment, in order to build pedagogic knowledge and demonstrate impact.

Actively contribute to the collective vision, mission and values of the University through individual action and inclusive, collaborative working.

Contribute to the life of the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering and the wider University community through administration responsibilities and committee membership, as required.

Participate in and develop links with external contacts (within academic, professions or with industry) to foster collaboration, at a regional and national level.
