We’re looking for an experienced Senior Technician (Specialist Services BMS) to join our Estates Team at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.
Estates play a crucial role in keeping our hospitals and services running. From essential power, heating, plumbing and mechanical systems, to the inside and outside of our buildings and grounds, Estates staff make sure these are safe and well‑maintained for patients, visitors and other staff.
In the Estates Operational team, you will work alongside other Senior Technicians, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and craft personnel, all committed to service excellence.
Main duties of the jobOur staff carry out vital inspections, maintenance and repairs across our sites to keep providing excellent care.
You will be responsible for the day‑to‑day management, administration and workload of various building staff within Estates, and for supervising external contractors to ensure works are completed on time and to agreed standards.
You must bring highly advanced trade experience along with the management, people and communication skills required to lead an effective team.

Person Specification Qualifications- Degree and specialist knowledge or equivalent level of knowledge – e.g., trade apprenticeship with a BTEC/HNC/Diploma in Engineering or equivalent City & Guilds qualification with intermediate practical and theoretical knowledge.
- Multi‑skilled qualifications.
- Detailed practical knowledge of building management systems.
- Accredited BMS courses.
- BS7671 update training.
- Thorough understanding of your specialist area and full conversational knowledge of current legislation.
- Demonstrable post‑apprenticeship experience in non‑routine maintenance and fault finding of complex engineering plant and equipment with a broad understanding of other trade disciplines.
- Experience liaising with and supervising building and engineering staff and contractors.
- Previous Authorised Person and/or Competent Person role.
- Previous experience in a hospital maintenance environment with exposure to all building and engineering aspects.
- Thorough knowledge of relevant NHS Technical standards and HTMs.
- Good communication, negotiating and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety policy and safe working procedures.
- Knowledge of statutory legislation and relevant codes of practice.
- Ability to read, understand and analyse complex engineering systems and drawings.
- Ability to work under own initiative in a demand‑driven service.
- Familiarity with Microsoft software and general computer literacy.
- Knowledge of operating a computerised labour management system.
- Good supervisory skills.
- Knowledge of operating a computerised building management system.
- Mentoring and training experience.

Salary: £39,959 to £48,117 a year per annum (pro rata for part time staff).
