Transport Planner (Development Planning)

We are looking for a motivated and capable Transport Planner to join our Development Planning team in Sheffield. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of residential, commercial, mixed-use, education, healthcare, and employment developments, supporting clients through all stages of the planning process.

Working as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will prepare transport planning assessments, provide technical advice, and help deliver successful planning outcomes for a wide range of projects across Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Yorkshire, the North of England, and the wider UK.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, and other transport planning documents for planning applications.
  • Undertake transport analysis and junction capacity assessments using industry-standard software.
  • Analyse traffic, travel behaviour, accessibility, and transport data to support development proposals.
  • Assist in the preparation of development planning strategies and technical reports.
  • Liaise with clients, local authorities, highway authorities, and multidisciplinary project teams throughout project delivery.
  • Attend client meetings, design team meetings, site visits, and discussions with local planning and highway authorities.
  • Manage your workload effectively to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Support the preparation of fee proposals and contribute to business development opportunities where appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with relevant planning policy, transport guidance, and industry best practice.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues while continuing to develop your technical and professional skills.
  • Support the delivery of projects across a range of development sectors and geographic locations.
About You The successful candidate will have:
  • A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Planning, or a related discipline.
  • Approximately 2-7 years' experience in transport planning, preferably within a development planning consultancy.
  • Experience preparing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, and related technical documents.
  • A good understanding of the UK planning system and relevant transport planning guidance.
  • Experience using industry-standard transport planning software such as Junctions (PICADY, ARCADY, and Lin Sig), TRICS, and TEMPro.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organisational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise technical reports.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A proactive, client-focused approach and a willingness to take ownership of project tasks.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to undertake site visits where required.
  • Experience using GIS software.
  • Knowledge of sustainable transport, active travel, accessibility, and travel planning.
  • Experience contributing to planning appeals, public inquiries, or public consultation exercises.
  • Knowledge of transport planning policy and development management across Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Yorkshire, and the North of England.
  • Experience working with local highway authorities and transport stakeholders.
  • Working towards or holding membership of a relevant professional institution, such as CIHT or TPS.
