Job Description & How to Apply Below

Irise International seeks a values-driven Finance Trustee to support financial oversight and sustainability. Help strengthen governance for a feminist charity working for menstrual justice in the UK and East Africa. Flexible voluntary role, approx. 3–4 hours/month.

What difference will you make?

This role will help Irise make confident, well-informed financial decisions so we can sustain and grow our work for menstrual justice.

Strong financial oversight is essential to ensuring that our resources are used responsibly, transparently and in line with our values. The Finance Trustee will help the Board understand Irise’s financial position, manage risk, plan ahead and make strategic choices that protect the organisation’s long‑term sustainability.

Their contribution will directly support our ability to shift power and resources to young activists and grassroots leaders, deliver high-quality programmes, influence policy and build a stronger menstrual justice movement in the UK and East Africa.

By strengthening our financial governance, this trustee will help ensure Irise can continue to respond to the needs of the communities we work alongside, secure and manage funding effectively, and remain accountable to our partners, funders and movement. Ultimately, their expertise will help create the stable foundations needed for Irise to challenge menstrual injustice and support lasting systemic change.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who brings sound financial knowledge, good judgement and a genuine commitment to Irise’s mission and values.

The most important experience is confidence with financial management, including budgeting, financial reporting, cashflow management and financial controls. Experience of charity finance would be especially valuable, including restricted and unrestricted funding, Charity Commission reporting and the Charities SORP. A formal accountancy qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CIMA would be welcome, but we also value equivalent professional experience and recognise that people develop financial expertise through different routes.

We are looking for someone who can ask thoughtful questions, explain financial information clearly, and offer constructive challenge in a supportive way. They should be comfortable working collaboratively with trustees, staff and partners, and willing to help a small charity make practical, values‑led decisions.

We would particularly welcome applicants who bring lived experience of menstrual injustice, gender inequality, economic exclusion or related forms of marginalisation. We are also keen to hear from people with experience or strong alignment with feminist, decolonial, anti‑oppressive or intersectional approaches to leadership and governance.

Above all, we are seeking someone who shares our commitment to menstrual justice and wants to use their financial skills to replace grassroots change, accountability and long‑term sustainability.

Remote What will you be doing?

The Finance Trustee will play a key role in helping Irise strengthen its financial oversight and sustainability as we continue to grow our impact and shift power and resources to young activists and grassroots leaders.

Our Board is a committed, values‑led group with experience across governance, strategy, fundraising, programme delivery and lived experience of the issues we work on. We are actively working to diversify our Board further and strengthen specialist financial oversight alongside our Treasurer and CEO.

The new trustee will sit on the Finance Committee and work closely with the CEO and Treasurer to maintain a clear overview of Irise’s financial position. This will include supporting the development of the annual budget, advising on financial policies, monitoring cashflow and financial systems, supporting compliance with charity finance requirements, and helping the Board understand key financial risks, trends and decisions.

They will also contribute to financial reporting and accountability, including reviewing management accounts, supporting the annual accounts process, and helping ensure restricted funding is managed appropriately.

This role is especially important as Irise builds long‑term sustainability for its work in the UK and East Africa. The right trustee will help ensure our feminist, decolonial and movement‑led approach is backed by strong financial foundations, enabling us to keep investing in the leadership, evidence and advocacy needed to dismantle menstrual injustice.
