Full‑time (On site) permanent position in the School of Biosciences at the University of Sheffield. Salary £25,249 – £26,707 per annum, scalable to £28,778 based on performance.

Overview

The role supports practical teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate taught laboratories across a wide range of biomedical sciences, including cell biology, developmental biology, physiology, neuroscience, genetics, biochemistry, and microbiology.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare and aliquot materials for laboratory classes or other teaching activities, e.g. media, solutions, buffers, yeast, bacterial, mammalian cell cultures, model organisms, DNA, RNA, plasmids, electrophoresis gels, cell extracts, proteins, enzymes, plants, invertebrates, field equipment, and first aid supplies.
  • Set up, clear away, and re‑store reagents and equipment after classes, open days and any other lab use; maintain and calibrate equipment, handle waste and keep laboratories clean and organized.
  • Coordinate with the technical team to plan requirements for equipment, materials, IT and other resources; perform stock checks, ordering, inventorying and proper storage.
  • Prioritize work to meet deadlines and support senior staff in future planning.
  • Train and supervise junior staff in procedures, techniques and instrumentation.
  • Maintain accurate information, records and databases to ensure business continuity.
  • Apply relevant COSHH/risk assessments and departmental health and safety protocols.
  • Contribute to an inclusive culture where all staff and students feel welcome and treated fairly.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the behaviours outlined in the Technical and Professional Services Shared Skills framework.
  • Make ethical decisions and embed the University sustainability strategy into daily activities.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the post grade and remit.
Person Specification

Essential Criteria
  • Minimum qualifying GCSE grade in English and Maths, or equivalent Level 2 qualification or equivalent vocational experience.
  • Skills and experience in media, buffer and solution preparation; DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis; microscopy; cell culture; model organisms and developmental biology; pharmacology; physiology.
  • Skills and experience in microbial culture and sterile technique; protein handling and cell extract preparation; plant and invertebrate husbandry; ecology; fieldwork.
  • Understanding and application of Health and Safety regulations and safe working practices.
  • Effective communication with colleagues, students and staff.
  • Ability to follow correct procedures and instructions to meet statutory compliance.
  • Problem‑identification and suitable escalation routes.
  • Adaptability to changing workflow and routine tasks.
  • Willingness to engage in relevant training.
  • Technical Professional Registration or willingness to work toward it.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience providing laboratory technical support.
