Overview

We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Medicine and Population Health for a Clinical Research Fellow with expertise in advanced clinical neurophysiology and research into neurological and neurodegenerative disorders.

The role will involve supporting clinical research studies investigating neurophysiological biomarkers of neurological disease. The Clinical Research Fellow will undertake clinical neurophysiology assessments in patients, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electromyography (EMG) and peripheral nerve excitability recordings, alongside clinical assessments and, where required, blood/skin sampling. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary research team and contribute to patient recruitment, data collection and the delivery of clinical research studies.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with excellent clinical, organisational and communication skills. The successful candidate will be clinically qualified and have experience in the assessment of patients with neurological conditions and clinical neurophysiology. Practical experience of TMS, EMG and peripheral nerve excitability techniques is essential, together with the ability to undertake neurophysiological assessments in complex patients.

This is a part-time position and is ideally suited to an individual wishing to integrate clinical research alongside their clinical or academic training. The role offers an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in clinical neurophysiology and translational research within a well-established, collaborative and supportive research environment.

Main duties and responsibilities
  • Conduct high-quality clinical research in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, University and NHS policies and relevant study protocols.
  • Ensure research protocols are followed and all clinical, neurophysiological and study documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Identify, screen and recruit patients with neurological and neurodegenerative conditions to participate in clinical research studies.
  • Undertake clinical and neurophysiological assessments in research participants, including TMS, EMG and peripheral nerve excitability recordings, in accordance with established protocols and safety procedures.
  • Undertake blood sampling and other research procedures where required by study protocols and within appropriate clinical competencies.
  • Liaise with clinical and research teams to coordinate patient visits, assessments and study procedures, ensuring the effective delivery of research studies.
  • Contribute to the accurate collection, management and interpretation of clinical and neurophysiological research data.
  • Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post
