An opportunity has arisen to join a fast paced, innovative HR Department at one of the largest leading Teaching Hospital Trusts in the country. The department offers excellent opportunities to develop your HR practice working within a Business Partner model and dealing with a highly diversified workforce spanning both primary and secondary care settings. The successful candidates will support the HR Business Partner and HR Manager to provide a comprehensive HR service to a group of clinical specialties and corporate services. The Employee Relations Advisor will provide HR support and advice to colleagues both face to face and remotely across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals including the various Community Sites sites across Sheffield.

Main duties of the job

You will develop your HR career through managing a significant and varied caseload along with the provision of support and advice in the application of HR policies and terms and conditions. Within this role you will have the opportunity to provide training, coaching and mentoring to healthcare professionals leading and managing a high performing, high profile workforce.

We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate transferable experience of effectively supporting the management of employee relations cases and advising on terms and conditions. We will also consider applications from candidates who have experience of advising managers on HR related matters and can demonstrate sound judgement of how to approach sensitive and complex casework. A knowledge and understanding of relevant employment legislation is essential.

Person specification Qualification
  • Educated to A-level standard or equivalent qualification
  • CIPD qualified or working towards (or equivalent theoretical knowledge)
  • Evidence of CPD
Experience
  • Transferable experience of working in an advisory capacity in a relevant HR field involving sensitive and complex casework.
  • Able to demonstrate a strong understanding and sound judgement when approaching sensitive and complex casework.
  • Proven working knowledge of employment legislation.
  • Experience of advising managers on HR related matters.
  • Experience of supporting organisational change processes.
  • Experience of working within unionised environment.
  • Dealing with professional groups.
  • Working knowledge of NHS terms & conditions of service.
  • Understanding of job evaluation.
  • Knowledge of NHS employment standards and practice
  • Generalist HR experience
  • Involvement in formal hearings.
  • Ability to critically analyse employee relations cases and identify appropriate solutions through reference to organisational policies, employment legislation and precedent.
  • Influencing skills where conflicting opinion or a range of options are available.
  • Ability to remain calm in challenging and emotive situations.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages such as MS Word/MS Outlook.
  • Demonstrate an understanding in terms of good practice related to undertaking investigations.
  • Recognition of own personal boundaries and when to refer matters to others/senior colleagues.
  • Excellent organisational skills to manage a significant number of cases with strict deadlines.
  • Well-developed report writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate confidently to all levels of staff.
  • Effective team member and able to provide cover for and support to other team members.
  • Advanced IT skills.
