The role plays a key part in shaping how residents, businesses and staff access information and interact with Council services through digital channels, ensuring services are user-centred, accessible, consistent and easy to use.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary Digital Services team, the postholder will collaborate with content designers, user researchers, developers and service teams to deliver high-quality digital experiences. The role will help translate user research into effective design solutions, improve user journeys and support the development of digital services that make it easier for people to access information, complete transactions and engage with Council services online.

Key responsibilities

  • Design user-centred digital experiences that meet user needs and make complex processes simple, intuitive and accessible.
  • Use user research, analytics and stakeholder feedback to continuously improve user journeys and interfaces.
  • Develop concepts, user flows, wireframes and prototypes into polished, implementation ready designs.
  • Design responsive interfaces using a mobile-first approach whilst ensuring services work effectively across desktop and other devices.
  • Understand public sector accessibility requirements and design services that work for everyone, including users of assistive technologies.
  • Apply established design systems, components, patterns and style guidelines consistently and appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with developers throughout the design and implementation process to ensure design intentions are accurately delivered.
  • Lead on UX/UI improvement projects across websites, intranets, internal systems and digital services.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of design systems, component libraries, design standards and reusable patterns.

Skills and knowledge we are looking for

  • Experience in UX/UI design, creating and improving digital services at all stages of the end-to-end user journey.
  • Experience planning and delivering user-centred design activities based on evidence, user needs and business requirements.
  • Experience creating concepts, user flows, wireframes, prototypes and high-fidelity designs for digital services.
  • Ability to analyse user research, analytics and feedback to provide insights and design recommendations.
  • Can present design concepts and recommendations to a range of stakeholders in a way that they can easily be understood.
  • Experience using Figma to create and communicate design solutions.
  • Experience working with design systems and applying established patterns and components appropriately to create consistent user experiences.
  • Experience working closely with developers throughout delivery, providing design assets, supporting implementation and resolving design challenges.
  • Experience designing responsive interfaces using a mobile-first approach whilst considering desktop and other device experiences.
  • Experience designing for both public-facing and internal business systems.
  • Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and accessible design principles.
