Overview

As a Support Technician you will be an integral member of the Schools electrical services team. Based in the Schools Central campus facility and supporting activities at satellite sites, you will collaborate with other team members and assist in the manufacture of specialist equipment and components for research activities. The work is diverse and varied.

You will work with the Technical Manager and Senior Technical Specialist, comprehend technical documentation, provide outstanding customer service, and work safely at all times in compliance with health and safety legislation and environmental procedures.

Main duties and responsibilities
  • Assist in the delivery of comprehensive and proactive technical service to staff and students across the School, ensuring a high level of customer service and supporting experimental work.
  • Support the Technical Manager and other team members with the daily running of the workshop facility to ensure service excellence.
  • Build and install electrical control panels and enclosures for new projects.
  • Interpret technical documentation.
  • Possess knowledge of regularly used IT applications and CAD software.
  • Source and procure materials and equipment, placing orders on SAP, fully complying with University financial regulations.
Criteria
  • Experience equivalent to minimum qualifying GCSE grade in English and Maths or equivalent level 2 qualification.
  • Be able to select and use appropriate hand tools safely to build enclosures.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to learn to use CAD software to design or develop circuit boards, enclosures.
  • Some knowledge of instrumentation software.
  • Work efficiently and effectively at all times, maintaining workplace organisation and minimising waste.
  • Adaptable to the demands of the role and changes in workflow, planning and organising routine tasks.
  • Understanding and application of Health and Safety regulations and safe working practices.
  • Ability to work thoroughly and methodically.
  • Knowledge of sensors used in measurement and control systems such as LVDTs, potentiometers, encoders and bridge‑based sensors.
  • Demonstrable vocational skills and some experience applying the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
