CNC Machinist

Responsibilities

• Set up and change over and operate a range of mill-turn, twin turret, grinding or sliding head machines and machining centers by installing and adjusting work holding, tooling and tool wear offsets.
• Load and safely operate a range of CNC machines efficiently, ensuring downtime is minimized and the ability to run multiple machines/set‑ups (multi‑task) is maintained.
• Recognise, deploy and properly use inserts, work holding and tooling; identify production process tool wear and adjust, replace worn or damaged cutting tools in a timely manner.
• Verify programs and settings using a range of measuring and inspection equipment, applying adjustments to maintain component quality.
• Provide timely feedback to the Line Manager on issues and recommend process or quality improvements.
• Record all process operations electronically on all machine tools used and maintain daily results.
• Contribute to continuous improvement activities within the machining section.
• Carry out daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks as required and maintain a high level of housekeeping.
• Adhere to company procedure at all times and take a proactive approach to health, safety and environmental risks, reporting them to management as appropriate.
• Train and mentor other machinists/apprentices on site.
• Support with any other ad‑hoc tasks where required.

• Skilled engineer with experience setting and operating CNC machines.
• Good numeracy and literacy skills; basic mathematical computations, including trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.
• Good IT skills and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Communicates honestly, professionally and respectfully with others and demonstrates effective listening skills.
• Understand and perform work shift and tool wear compensation/offsets.
• Perform daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on machinery.

• Experience working to tight tolerances in a wide range of materials.
• Strong working knowledge of cutting tool setting and applications and competency with complex fixtures.
• Ability to troubleshoot machining processes and work under own initiative.
• Experience in a dynamic sub‑contract machining environment.
• FLT licence desirable.
• Ability to reduce setup time and machining through process improvements.
• Experience of aerospace machining and AS9100 requirements is desirable; other highly regulated industries (medical, nuclear, automotive, etc.) are also considered.
• Previous experience as a machinist with experience of CNC machines.
• Minimum HNC qualified machinist.
