Position: Branch Newsletter Editor (Herts & Middlesex)

Branch Newsletter Editor (Herts & Middlesex)

Branch newsletters are a vital way for us to keep our members informed about local news and how they can help butterflies and moths in their area. They also play an important role in connecting people to nature, helping us to recruit new members and retain those already with us, and generating income for our conservation work.

Why we want you

To plan and co‑ordinate the production of a printed or electronic Branch newsletter for distribution to Branch members of Butterfly Conservation.

To help retain members by providing them with local information about butterflies and moths and opportunities to get involved with our work.

To increase the number of members who support us in more than one way (e.g. by volunteering).

What you will be doing
  • Sourcing and editing articles for the Branch newsletter.
  • Agreeing content for the newsletter with the Branch Committee.
  • If the newsletter is printed, coordinating printing and distribution of the newsletter.
  • If the newsletter is online, liaising with Head Office to email the newsletter out.
The skills you need
  • Good written communication skills; able to edit articles to ensure a clear message is being given, with good spelling and grammar.
  • Personable and able to work with a wide range of people.
  • Good organisational and time management skills; able to set achievable deadlines and meet them.
  • Access to email is helpful as many people will want to send articles electronically.
  • Able to represent Butterfly Conservation and its values.
What's in it for you
  • Volunteer with other members of your local Butterfly Conservation branch and the Communications Team and find out more about our work.
  • Develop transferable skills such as communication, working with other people, innovation and creativity, planning and problem solving.
  • Increase your social circle with like‑minded people, boosting your wellbeing.

Disclaimer

This role is active year round, though it will be quiet in between newsletters. The days and times that you volunteer in this role are flexible, but there may be pre‑determined periods when newsletters are usually issued, as agreed with the Branch Committee. We ask for a minimum commitment of six months. Children aged 13‑15 must be accompanied by an adult whilst volunteering.

If you are aged 16 or 17, your parent may give written permission for you to volunteer without supervision. Please be aware that our insurance cover differs slightly for people aged 75 or over. Please contact the Volunteering Team for more information.
