Research Assistant/Associate, Research Scientist
Overview
The project is a collaboration with Rolls‑Royce to investigate the coking process and the characteristics of the deposited layer in jet‑engine fuel systems. Metallurgical analysis and mechanical assessment of the deposit layer formation in various materials, and an understanding of how different surface conditions affect deposit formation, are required. A good knowledge and experience in material analysis, including optical and scanning electron microscopy, is necessary.
MainDuties and Responsibilities
- Work effectively with industrial and academic partners and communicate results.
- Conduct the required experiments as agreed based on the project plan.
- Analyse results and present findings in weekly meetings.
- Prepare drafts of potential publications with the other partners.
- Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
- Holds a Master of Science degree (or equivalent relevant experience).
- Experience in metallurgical preparation.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, confidence in presenting technical information to both academic researchers and industrial partners, and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Good knowledge of materials properties and elemental analysis of materials.
- Experience in using sample preparation technique.
- Experience in using optical and electron microscopy.
- Highly organised, self‑motivated, with strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering high‑quality research in an industrially funded environment.
- Good understanding of metallic manufacturing processes, particularly machining, tube drawing, or related manufacturing methods, and their influence on surface integrity and material behaviour.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse experimental data, prepare high‑quality technical reports, present findings, and contribute to scientific publications.
Grade
6. Salary £32,080 – £36,636. Part‑time. 1‑year term. Line manager:
Prof Hassan Ghadbeigi.
