Research Associate - New Musical Technologies for Older Adults' Wellbeing

The University of Sheffield is inviting applications for a Research Associate position focused on the development and evaluation of new musical technologies designed to support the wellbeing of older adults. This research project explores the intersection of music, technology, health, and ageing, aiming to design innovative interventions that enhance quality of life, cognitive engagement, emotional wellbeing, and social connection among older populations.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team engaged in human-centred design, digital health innovation, and applied music technology research. The role involves contributing to the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of novel musical systems and participatory research activities with older adults. The postholder will also support data collection, qualitative and quantitative analysis, academic dissemination, and collaboration with interdisciplinary partners.

The project emphasizes co-creation with older adults and stakeholders, ensuring that technological solutions are accessible, inclusive, and grounded in lived experience. The Research Associate will contribute to publications, conference presentations, and wider knowledge exchange activities.

Eligibility Criteria
  • A PhD (or near completion) in a relevant discipline such as Music Technology, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Psychology, Digital Health, or related fields
  • Strong research experience in interdisciplinary or applied research environments
  • Experience working with older adults or in health and wellbeing research is desirable
  • Evidence of high-quality academic output or equivalent research experience
Required Expertise/Skills
  • Strong knowledge of research methods in qualitative and/or quantitative analysis
  • Experience in music technology, digital health, or human-centred design
  • Ability to develop or evaluate interactive technological systems
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience in academic writing and dissemination of research findings
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Interest in ageing, wellbeing, and technology innovation
Salary Details
  • Salary will be in line with University of Sheffield Research Associate pay scales
