The University of Sheffield offers a base pay range of £23,742 – £24,685, with potential to progress to £25,804 through sustained exceptional contribution. Salary is based on skills and experience. Annual leave of a minimum 38 days (including bank holidays and closure days) is available and can be purchased in addition. Overview

The role involves providing a reactive and planned maintenance service operating in a fast‑paced environment across the University’s campus. Primary responsibilities include painting and decorating, with additional support to other maintenance functions as required. The role requires manual handling, ladder and scaffold use, and the ability to complete tasks efficiently while maintaining a professional finish.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned painting and decorating across the campus, travelling by university vehicle and ensuring jobs are completed safely and on time.
  • Complete small refurbishment works in occupied buildings, maintaining access and security while minimising disruption; undertake ancillary tasks such as shelf bracket and noticeboard removal and replacement.
  • Operate in compliance with university policies, procedures, technical legislation and health and safety standards.
  • Prioritise jobs, make decisions on methods and sequences, and manage workload effectively.
  • Liaise with contractors on university premises to ensure adherence to time‑frames and health and safety standards.
  • Maintain good relationships with key contacts in university departments and keep them updated on progress.
  • Report consumable stock levels to support planned and reactive maintenance.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and vehicles, carrying out regular checks to ensure good condition.
  • Respond to out‑of‑hours requests as part of a formal on‑call rota; participation determined by the university.
  • Carry out other duties as required.

Essential Criteria
  • Industry‑recognised qualification such as City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating (Course 6707‑33) or equivalent experience.
  • Specialist knowledge of building practice and current decorative best‑practice techniques.
  • Working knowledge of current health and safety legislation and the ability to apply it in day‑to‑day work.
  • Experience using access equipment such as MEWPS, ladders, scaffolding etc.
  • Professional, customer‑focused service in a busy environment.
  • Ability to prioritise and respond to changing demands effectively.
  • Competent assessment and organisation of resources, planning and progressing work activities within deadlines, using handheld devices.
  • Willingness to support the team by undertaking out‑of‑hours work when required.
  • Teamwork experience with positive contributions to daily work and team goals.
  • Experience loading and unloading materials across campus.
  • Proficiency with IT systems such as Google Apps, Microsoft Word and Excel, email and electronic calendars.
  • Full and valid driving licence.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience in multi‑facade maintenance of historic or award‑winning buildings (e.g., Arts Tower, Information Commons).
