Summary of Role

Roundabout are looking for an enthusiastic person who has a passion for learning and developing their skills working with homeless young people, with a view to gaining future employment as a keyworker within Roundabout. We aim to support the trainee to develop strong communication skills, resilience, excellent data recording skills and become an integral part of the team at the hostel.

The post requires you to work as part of a team to provide 24-hour support on a rota basis within an accommodation-based service which houses young people aged 16-21 years.

As the trainee, you will initially be working as part of a larger team and through training and development you will support and manage a reduced caseload of 2 young people.

You will develop skills around understanding relationships with young people, help guide them through their support plan process and complete assessments to identify goals through working in a strength-based approach. You will help deliver life-skills sessions in areas such as: managing a tenancy, self-care, budgeting, money management, managing health issues, claiming benefits, accessing external services, training, education and employment opportunities and learning to live successfully within communities.

The hostel team also hold activity sessions for young people at the service and out in the wider community.

Key Accountabilities
  • To engage positively with all young people, seeking to support and understand their backgrounds and behaviours and to develop an understanding of delivering support services within a Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE)
  • Complete health and safety checks, alongside damage checks and report repairs as necessary
  • To maintain regular contact with young people and ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times.
  • To work using a strength-based approach to deliver support for young people with complex needs with an overall aim to improve their psychological and emotional well-being.
  • To undertake multi agency work with a range of key agencies, to identify and signpost to specialist agencies where appropriate.
  • To build meaningful relationships and providing assertive and positive support to all young people.
  • Work as part of a team on a rota basis including evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays
  • Roundabout needs a team player who is motivated and committed to supporting young people to attend appointments, have an ability to advocate for them and to listen to their ideas and suggestions to develop and improve our service.
Other Duties
  • Turn around void bedspaces in a timely manner which includes cleaning and preparing the rooms for the next occupant.
  • Assist with managing stock, ordering items and competing inventories with young people on entry and exit to the service.
  • Take responsibility and ownership for maintaining a clean and safe environment both internally and externally.
  • Act in the best interests of Roundabout at all times
  • Participate in training and undertake appropriate learning and development, as identified through appraisal and regular reviews with line manager
Person Specification Specific Knowledge, Experience & Skills
  • Transferable skills and/or experience of working with a vulnerable client group who present with multiple needs
  • An understanding of the issues facing homeless young people or a similar client group
  • An understanding of working in a strength-based approach in relation to support young people with complex needs
  • Ability to recognise and challenge negatives behaviour
  • Understanding of safeguarding issues faced by young people
  • Act as a reflective practitioner to take responsibility for sharing skills and knowledge to improve the service and support for young people
  • Have excellent IT and communication skills to deliver reports, recording and share information in a professional manner
  • To take responsibility to keep skills and knowledge up to date by attending relevant training
