Job DescriptionThe Sheffield Foyer provides accommodation, training, and support to help homeless young people aged 17-25 move toward independent living, including securing their own tenancies and entering employment.
We now have an exciting opportunity for a Support Officer to join our team. In this role, you will empower young people to build confidence, develop independence, and enhance their wellbeing. You will create a safe and supportive environment where residents can learn new skills, take part in positive activities, and make meaningful progress toward work, training, and a brighter future.
What you’ll be doing
As a Support Worker, you will plan and deliver a wide range of fun, engaging wellbeing activities such as arts and crafts, fitness sessions, cooking, gardening, yoga, and relaxation workshops, helping to create a positive and supportive environment for young people. You will encourage residents to take part, try new experiences, and recognise their achievements, while also supporting them to build independent living skills and progress into education, training, or employment.

The successful candidate will actively promote social cohesion within the Foyer, championing diversity and helping to bring our community together.
The role involves working shifts on rotation which will include late shifts (12.30pm – 8pm) once a week and twice every three weeks. Other shifts will be a standard 9-5pm.
What we’re looking for:
- A sensitive, supportive approach and genuine passion for helping young people thrive.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Experience working with of working and engaging with young people, especially in challenging or vulnerable situations.
- Experience of dealing with disengagement and challenging behaviour
- Knowledge of organisations providing services to young people
- Computer literate with good organisational skills & good level of numeracy.
- A relevant youth or community qualification (or willingness to work toward one)
- Experience of working in a residential setting

- Offer emotional support and mentoring, creating a safe and encouraging environment for personal growth.
- Collaborate with other professionals and organizations to ensure comprehensive support for our young residents.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of support provided and resident progress.
- Attend regular team meetings and training sessions to stay updated on best practices and share experiences.
- Promote a positive and inclusive community within the Foyer, fostering a sense of belonging.
- Ensure the physical and emotional well-being of residents by identifying and addressing any concerns or challenges.
- A passion for supporting and empowering young people, with a commitment to their personal development.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, able to prioritize tasks and work independently.
- A flexible and adaptable approach, willing to learn and embrace new ideas and methods.
- Empathy and a non-judgmental attitude, creating a safe and supportive environment for residents.
- Previous experience in a similar support role or a strong understanding of youth development is preferred.
- A willingness to undergo relevant training and development opportunities to enhance your skills.
- A valid driving license and access to a vehicle for occasional off-site activities or meetings.
