Junior Developer

Overview

IT Services at the University of Sheffield provide a full range of complex IT and technology-enabled services that support education, research, workplace, corporate services and infrastructure enablers to all our staff and students. This large and highly innovative department is undergoing a significant amount of change as it establishes itself as a key enterprise IT partner that works across the University, with stakeholders and key partners to deliver enterprise-wide products and services in line with strategic aims.

• Develop and enhance in-house applications and integrations underpinning the student lifecycle
• Provide support for our systems
• Follow team processes and standards for development, including writing clear documentation, adding logging and error handling, and sharing knowledge with colleagues
• Help identify where processes could be automated and contribute to implementing automation, testing, security and maintenance improvements
• Maintain existing systems, applications, integrations and data processing supported by the team
• Work as part of project and agile teams, and sometimes independently, on a variety of projects
• Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post

• Stage(s) assessed at: Have an honours degree in a related subject area, equivalent qualifications or significant equivalent experience.
• Application: Experience developing systems using Java and Spring framework.
• Application & Interview: Experience working with databases like MySQL, MongoDB or Oracle and also related Java frameworks such as Hibernate or JPA.
• Application & Interview: Experience with HTML, CSS and JSP, ideally with responsive and accessible design.
• Application & Interview: Experience working collaboratively as part of a team, using tools like Git and Jira.
• Application & Interview: Ability to debug and troubleshoot issues in code and integrations.
• Application & Interview: Awareness of software quality practices such as testing, version control and documentation.
• Application & Interview: Experience or willingness to learn about AWS cloud environments.
• Application: Experience with continuous integration / deployment and other Dev Ops practices.

Grade 6

£32,080 - £36,363 per annum. Potential to progress to £39,906 through sustained exceptional contribution.
