  • Oversees the duties of Natural Gas Technician I, II, and III.
  • Coordinates and participates in the work of a crew in the installation, repair, or replacement of gas lines and facilities including meters, valves, and other system components.
  • Assigns tasks to workers in the field and inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions.
  • Supervises and participates in replacing stopped and leaking meters; assists in installing and repairing meters.
  • Maintains computerized log of work; maintains maintenance records; maintains, repairs, and installs SCADA system; reviews crew member paperwork for accuracy and completeness.
  • Trains and instructs subordinates; recommends training for operator qualification system as needed for staff.
  • Evaluates the performance of staff; maintains time sheets.
  • Responds to calls of gas leaks, controls area, and supervises crew in the detection and repair of leaks.
  • Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instructions from the Natural Gas Superintendent.
  • Supervises and participates in leak surveys.
  • Schedules meter and regulator station testing; repairs and installs regulators and meter stations; inspects and rebuilds regulator stations as required.
  • Oversees assembly and installation of meters; maintains, inspects, and repairs valves and other gas appurtenances.
  • Selects necessary equipment and materials based on job requirements; purchases division materials and equipment.
  • Oversees the loading and transportation of equipment and materials in preparation for work; ensures proper construction signing and safety precautions of crew.
  • Investigates complaints and trouble calls; recommends action; communicates department policies and procedures to citizens.
  • Supervises the maintenance and upkeep of machinery and tools used by the crew.
  • Operates construction equipment such as backhoes, loaders, trenchers, boring equipment, etc.
  • Participates in meetings to review distribution integrity management plan and operations and maintenance manual; implements any changes to the plan as necessary in the field.
  • Recognizes abnormal operating conditions (AOC) on tasks being performed.
  • May be required to work outside normal working hours in stand‑by, on‑call, or emergency situations.
Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in the maintenance, repair, and construction of gas lines and facilities including supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Maintain Operator Qualification requirements as defined for Natural Gas Technician IV. Completion of Supervisory Training as available. Maintain excavation, trenching and shoring, flagging, and competent person training.

May be required to obtain welding and/or NACE CP certification(s). Valid commercial driver’s license in the State of North Carolina.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the maintenance, repair, and installation practices of gas line pipe fitting; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; thorough knowledge of the specialized tools and equipment related to gas pipe fitting and skill in their use; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; ability to assign and supervise the work of others;

ability to prepare simple reports and maintain records; ability to operate equipment related to the area assigned; ability to work independently; mechanical aptitude; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, outside contractors, property owners, and the general public.
