Purpose and ScopeResponsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines and supporting the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Performs patient education, maintains a safe working environment, and participates in quality improvement activities.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities Patient‑Related- Assist team members in providing detailed patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease processes.
- Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency.
- Perform vascular access cannulation, administer heparin, and record pre‑ and post‑treatment vital signs and weight.
- Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, monitor patient response, and intervene when necessary.
- Document all treatment parameters, vital signs, and interventions on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes.
- Observe and record patient status throughout treatment, including vascular access pressures and any complications.
- Prepare specimens for laboratory testing and ensure blood spills are cleaned immediately.
- Keep supplies ready, maintain machine safety checks, and support self‑care under RN supervision.
- Assist in training direct‑care staff on dialysis programs under RN supervision.
- Follow all organization business policies, procedures, and ethical practices.
- Maintain environmental integrity; clean and disinfect dialysis equipment between treatments.
- Perform pretreatment machine safety checks and initiate SDS system as required.
- Document CQI activity participation.
- Enter all treatment data into the clinical application accurately and timely.
- Review treatment sheets for completeness and correct any omitted entries.
- Prepare initial patient charts and lab requisitions; coordinate lab specimen handling.
- Assist with infection control audits and reinforce patient and staff adherence to protocols.
- Follow infection control policies and provide education as directed.
- Support newly admitted patients through the first four weeks of dialysis, coordinate care, and assist with modality education.
- Coordinate transitions to patients’ chosen dialysis modality and manage inventory for the TCU.
- Work involves desk/PC tasks and frequent interaction with patients, staff, and physicians.
- Travel between facilities and community locations, plus corporate meetings as required.
- Heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs.) and frequent standing; use two‑person assist program and equipment aids as needed.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Membership on CMS‑approved state/ national certification list within required timeframe.
- All state licensure, education, and training requirements to be met.
- Demonstrated commitment to organizational culture and customer service standards.
- Prior patient‑care experience in a hospital or similar setting preferred.
- Completion of Fresenius dialysis training program and CPR certification required for continued employment.
- Employees must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test; the company will consider reasonable accommodations.
