Job purpose

The GIS Drafter provides technical skills in computer-aided drafting (CAD) to support DREMC’s Engineering Department in preparing, maintaining, and digitizing engineering maps and construction drawings. This position contributes to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of reliable, cost-effective electric service for DREMC members.

Job dimensions

Internal Responsibilities – Collaborates within Engineering and partners with Operations, and other departments to prepare and maintain drawings, GIS records, and construction details. Assist engineers, office personnel, and field staff with project needs, surveys, work order postings, and cost data compilation.

External Responsibilities – Interacts with agencies, contractors, surveyors, communications companies, and the public as needed to exchange technical information and ensure accurate drawings and records.

Principal accountabilities
  • Create and update construction detail drawings, maps and records using CAD/GIS software. Digitize or redraw legacy engineering drawings to enhance clarity and usability. Process and prepare project plans from external agencies (e.g., TVA, state/federal transportation departments).
  • Assists in the design and drafting of special project drawings including substations, transformer stations, voltage regulators, and related distribution equipment.
  • Maintains organized files of engineering maps, drawings, and related records.
  • Posts work orders and other records to GIS.
  • Provide assistance with surveying/staking, cost estimating, construction projects, and data compilation activities.
  • Assist engineering personnel with posting records, compiling cost data, and preparing estimates.
  • Participates in field construction projects as assigned, including substation construction, system conversions, and material handling.
  • Ensures compliance with cooperative policies, codes, and standards.
  • Emergency response coverage, as needed.
  • Minimum requirements

    Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a drafting or technical program (e.g., TCAT or similar vocational/technical institution) required. Post secondary degrees are desired.

    Experience: ESRI or CAD software experience desired. Prior drafting, mapping, or utility engineering support experience preferred.

    Certification/License, etc.: Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Tennessee Drivers’ License. Must be eligible and remain insured as a driver by the Cooperative’s group liability policy for the automotive fleet.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Proficiency in computer-aided drafting and GIS mapping, strong organizational skills for maintaining detailed records and drawings, Ability to assist with surveying, construction projects, and technical problem solving, Effective communication skills for coordinating with coworkers, members, and external agencies, and commitment to safety, accuracy, and cooperative objectives.

    Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods while working at a computer or reviewing plans and maps. Requires occasional walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 25 pounds, particularly when handling equipment, documents, or hardware components. Manual dexterity required for operating plotters, printers, copiers, and GIS hardware. Visual acuity needed to view detailed maps, diagrams, and digital displays with precision.

    Occasional field visits may require the ability to walk over uneven terrain, access utility poles or right-of-way areas, and operate in outdoor conditions. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle for travel between district offices and field locations.
